How hard is it really to be accurate at 300-400 yards with an ar 15

What's important is that you follow-through, that's to say, continue to aim with trigger depressed until recoil has subsided. By following through you will understand the target/sight relationship or sight picture as the bullet clears the bore; and thus, you will know where the bullet should...

Walt, I don't know why any here feel compelled to contribute to this forum; but, for me, it's an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences on a subject that I find to be fascinating. I also don't know how many here are interested in marksmanship; but, it appears, judging from overall...

I don't speak for walt willis; but, it appears we have the same desire to help shooters become the riflemen they're aspiring to be. Although marksmanship is settled science, that's to say, we know what's important to good shooting, we all have somewhat unique perspectives on it. Listening to...

AR15 Match Upper - Which way to go?

OP, I'd suggest you start off by attending an M1 Garand Clinic, if you indeed want to participate in CMP or NRA governed Service Rifle Competition. The clinic will orientate you to what Service Rifle Competition is all about. You will discover the rifle is the least of what you will need to...

Seems like some pretty good advice to me.

The USAMU builds some pretty accurate AR's. Interestingly, with a little knowledge and a little money you and I could build similarly accurate AR's. Thing is, even with a competitive AR, it would require some real talent to shoot like those black hat guys.

The peep sight is a marvelous invention. Using the eye's natural ability to both balance and center things, the peep makes it possible to consistently align sights for a perfect understanding of where the barrel is pointed. In addition, the aperture provides depth of field, making it possible to...

How hard is it really to be accurate at 300-400 yards with an ar 15

Some folks seem amazed about the great results that are within their means shooting the AR at 300 yards; but, according to the NRA 300 yards is considered short range. In other words, it's no big deal. Some of my impressions on AR performance at mid and long range: At 600 yards I can shoot my...

Reasons for lateral POI shift II

You cannot disassociate yourself from execution of the firing tasks unless you put the rifle in a jig. The reality is you have contact with the gun and the ground and this contact must be controlled consistently. When your arc of movement is not controlled and/or recoil resistance is made...

Reasons for lateral POI shift II

Here's the short answer to your question: when any principle, element, or factor of shooting is different from shot to shot then a different result should be expected. Changing a bullet changes recoil resistance. This is exacerbated with any other ammunition component substitutions and bullet...

How hard is it really to be accurate at 300-400 yards with an ar 15

I'd add, an accurate AR is possible out to any distance the bullet can get to nose-on.

I never stated a 10 mph wind was a hint of wind. Re read my post.

A hint of wind would be feeling it on the face. That's to say, that would be the first thing a shooter would notice while occupied with the firing tasks, giving the shooter a hint that he might want to adjust his sight. This effect is worth 3 to 5 mph and would be bracketed to 4 mph for a good...

How hard is it really to be accurate at 300-400 yards with an ar 15

A 10 mph full value wind will produce about 3 MOA of drift at 300 yards with most any .223 ammunition. Not countering for this would displace the bullet path about 9 inches at target. I'd say that's getting your ass kicked pretty hard. The fact is at 300 yards even a hint of wind must be...

How hard is it really to be accurate at 300-400 yards with an ar 15

OP, Accuracy with an AR at distance is all about the bullet's B.C. If higher B.C. bullets were available better results would be possible at longer distances. In other words, B.C. helps to counter wind and weather effects on trajectory. A shooter who knows nothing about good shooting will...

How far can you hold 1 MOA accuracy? - Reality check

My goal is to have bullet path intersect line of sight. In competition with match conditioned Service Rifle in sling supported prone position I can hold better than an MOA at 100 yards. At 600 yards I can hold a little worse than 2 MOA, and at 1000 yards a little better than 3MOA.

Where can a guy go for long range training beyond what I learned in boot camp?

I don't see LR being different than HP or Small Bore shooting. What I do see are shooters, who do not know how to build a steady position, having difficulty getting consistent recoil resistance. In addition, these shooters, not being capable of maximizing bone/artificial support to minimize arc...

After bore cleaning, do your groups start bad and tighten up?

After cleaning, I will shoot about 14 rounds before match day. On match day I will shoot 8 sighters and then go for record. This schedule seems to assure a very good first round hit. I've gone for record on some occasions earlier, like after finding the x ring, but, having shot a few nine ring...
