Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

Another way of saying it: Follow through is simply applying the principles until recoil has subsided. Follow through allows the bullet to clear the barrel before the brain allows the shooter to relax. Follow through permits the shooter to call the shot, that's to say, to recognize where the...

    Colt AR-15 ???s

What a great post. Folks come to my M4 Marksmanship Course with all sorts of commercial equivalents of the Colt M4, like those from DPMS, Windham, Bushmaster, Delton, Daniel Defense, and all the other usual suspects. The one thing that stands out with Colt is the ease with which they can be...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

The prone position with bone alone or bone and sling is indeed one where the torso in either bent knee or straight leg configuration will be different than when shooting with bipod where non firing hand is at butt. Attempting to get body alignment parallel to rifle will cause extreme muscular...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

You're using your brain to distinguish consistency but it appears you may still be somewhat unorganized. Perhaps you are doing too much thinking, which can overload productivity. This order may help: 1. Shoulder the rifle without looking at target or steering to it. Be cognizant of the 5...

    Advanced Marksmanship "Reading" wind

Related, search USAMU Wind Reading Tips from SFC Praslick. He has written a two part article on wind reading to serve aspiring HP shooters. Although the tips are in context to HP competition, remember, HP competition is a means for any shooter to get an understanding for everything important to...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

Very good post. I read MOA at target distance without the fraction. I also convert from MOA to inches and inches to MOA when using irons without the fraction. It's current SDM doctrine for wind favors. The only place I take the fraction is in come ups from SR to LR.

    which reticle, moa? mil?

Read post #25 from Sinister in the Advanced Marksmanship thread on "Reading" wind.

    which reticle, moa? mil?

The constant of 10 is fraction-less. The idea that the MOAR-T is being bought by folks who have misconceptions is both speculation, and perception coming it appears from your experiences in limited applications for the concepts being discussed on this thread.

    Advanced Marksmanship "Reading" wind

What's important is the average wind from target to shooter. Some of the most experienced shooters instruct to appraise mid range wind to understand the average wind from shooter to target. This is what I do. Results in EIC as well as in NRA LR have proven this technique is effective. I...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

Wind velocity can be bracketed from highest to lowest possible velocity for an average then valued at full or half value. The fraction-less aspect is the MOA constant of 10 which can be used for fast calculation of counter to drift for a good hit without need for a calculator for cartridges...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

Silly wind formula, what's silly about it: distance divided by 100 times wind value divided by 10. Works for high velocity rounds like M855 and M118LR to maximum effective range of bullet. Example: 600 yards and wind seen as raising dust and blowing loose paper from 1 to 7: 600 divided by 100...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

I did not know there was an argument or debate here. Folks have preferences for the means to accomplish a task from what they have come to understand about how to accomplish the task. When the understanding is limited, that's to say, when a shooter does not have a comprehensive knowledge about...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

For wind counters, the formula which uses a constant for solution in MOA, being less fractional than using a constant for solution in mils, allows for fast processing without need for a calculator or a ballistics program, as would be required for a quick solution in mils; and, when the shooter...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

The silly formula I use is the one Soldiers participating the USAMU SDM course are taught to use.

    which reticle, moa? mil?

You need to do the math to determine the wind value in either MOA or mils. For example, you are shooting at 600 yards with a full value 8 mph wind using a bullet that takes the constant of 11 for an MOA solution. Now, without a math formula in head or with calculator tell me how many mils or MOA...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

MOA = 1.047 at 100. Mil = 3.6 at 100, and the reticle hash markings can subtend finer in fractional MOA. Also, typical mil dial is tenth mil or .36 at 100 while typical MOA dial is 1/4 minute or .25 at 100. For wind counters average .308/.223 can use the constant of 10, allowing for math in head...

    which reticle, moa? mil?

I like MOA reticle and MOA dials. This is because I like to range with greater precision than possible with mil reticle; and because, I can favor wind in MOA using math that does not require a calculator, all while executing the firing tasks. I also think an MOA reticle with fractional value...

Advanced Marksmanship question about my groups. (sorry if this doesnt belong here)

Shoot 20 round groups. Plot both calls and shots. Look for trends. To see patterns, stretch your exercise to 200 yards. Shoot in cadence. Shoot at a bullseye type target such as an NRA HP SR repair center. Make it your mission to concentrate on the things that produce movement: muscling the...

Problems with COLT CRP 18 PRO

There seems to be some divergence in opinion on what ammunition is safe for a "Wylde" chamber. About 15 years ago the Ky State Rifle Team used M193 for practice sessions. It worked fine in match conditioned rifles chambered for 5.56. Some folks on the team had rifles with the Wylde chamber...
