Better training: 100 rounds one day a week or 20 rounds a day for five days a week?

You really can't work on one variable at a time, since the act of firing is an integrated act with many things supporting sight alignment and trigger control. You can address prevalent issues, such as trigger control; but, that's not the point. The point is, every group you shoot, where shots...

    Advanced Marksmanship it all matters

Firing a rifle is an integrated act, where "everything" supports the two principles of marksmanship, sight alignment and trigger control. You mention breathing but it is not part of the "everything" that you want to think about, since it only becomes a concern when the shooter does indeed...

    Help with CMMG accuracy expectation

OP, I expect to hit where aimed, don't you? Think about it. Why did you buy your rifle? Certainly it was to serve a need. Does it fulfill the need? I doubt it's for LR, or benchrest competitons, so, for what shooting sports that are left, it would appear that your rifle would provide a very...

Problems with COLT CRP 18 PRO

OP, First, either the ammo or barrel is an issue, as tolerances are stacking. This is not acceptable. The issue must be resolved. The consequence is not just poor match results, but, from the inability to clear the rifle, there is a safety concern . I have had this issue on many occasions, 3 of...

Better training: 100 rounds one day a week or 20 rounds a day for five days a week?

The questions are: How much practice at supported prone do you need to get it, that's to say, how much practice is needed to build a steady position? How much practice do you need to understand the position is consistent? How much practice is necessary to discern perspective of aim is...

what would/do you shoot for National Match ?

Folks undoubtedly like the commercial equivalent of the M14 such as the one marketed by Springfield Armory which is known as the M1A National Match; but, they're not buying this rifle to actually use it in Service Rifle competition. This rifle has been eclipsed by match conditioned commercial...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

From the little I've seen of your shooting, I'd say you are getting the job done; yet, if putting bullets in one hole is where you want to take it, then the how to of perfecting the position from shot to shot will need to be addressed. You seem to be off to a great start.

Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

Here's a summary of the effect recoil has on marksmanship: A good position has three elements: bone/artificial support, muscular relaxation, and natural point of aim. If the shooter has good support the position will be muscularly relaxed; and, when relaxed, less muscle tension means less...

Why are Semi's not as forgiving as Bolt's?

I think it is you that is not correct saying, "the bolt action rifle is much more accurate than a semi-automatic". John Feamster wrote over 20 years ago in his book Black Magic about winning with an AR in bench rest competitions which suggested as many have since discovered the match conditioned...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

To hit consistently where aimed from shot to shot, what's important is making recoil resistance consistent from shot to shot; therefore, when I shoot, I am not thinking about recoil but instead I am thinking about rebuilding my position like it was for preceding shot. My focus is on sight...

the strangest group i have ever seen

I work with beginners; and, even when they come to understand what's important to good shooting, they still seldom execute as desired, since everything important to good shooting is too much to integrate within an initial exposure. This is why focus should be on the principles of marksmanship...

the strangest group i have ever seen

Since all shooter error is caused by inconsistency and not countering correctly for effects on trajectory, the shooter does not need to identify the cause of a bad shot. He only needs to concentrate on what it is that needs to be achieved, i.e. consistency and correctly countering for effects...

the strangest group i have ever seen

Here's what we know for sure: shots went where the barrel was pointed and shots did not go where aimed. Who knows why? Thing is we do not need to know why. The shooter must only concentrate on what is needed to hit where aimed, i.e. consistent sight alignment, trigger control, and consistent...

    Advanced Marksmanship On Laziness

While actively pursuing HP goals, I tended to focus on positions where I needed improvement, with focus on correction of what I was doing wrong. For example, shooting an 8 at 6 o'clock I might think I did not follow through. Now, having physical challenges which have compromised my shooting...

    AR15 keyholing

Insufficient neck tension and/or insufficient bullet seating will cause the bullet to distort off cartridge axis upon bullet tip contacting feed ramp as cartridge is being fed to chamber. This bullet, which is no longer concentric to case neck, is forced to comply with bore axis and upon leaving...

    AR15 keyholing

There are a a few posters here like Greg and 1SMALLJOHNSON who have a lot of experience with this topic. They suspect bullet distortion, as do I, since this is what would cause the result as described. If we look at where and how the distortion could come about it becomes clear that if it is a...

    AR15 keyholing

Look at what the outcomes can be with the introduction of another rifle no matter what the twist when shooting the factory and hand loaded ammunition as earlier tested. Since all .223 twists from one in twelve to one in seven will accommodate 55 grain bullets what I want to know is what could be...

    AR15 keyholing

Facts make it certain this is not the issue, think about it. If the bore was not rifled and/or .243 caliber the 55 grain factory loads would come out of such a barrel tumbling end over end. These bullet are instead stable, flying nose-on, which means the bore is indeed rifled and the bore...

    AR15 keyholing

Considering the 55 grain bullet weight, what big difference would one expect? Since the 1/12 twist common to many .223 bolt guns will stabilize 55 grain ammunition, I would assume such a bolt gun would stabilize the OP's bullet too, unless the bullet was defective.

    MOA reticle range estimation question

How can a shooter reliably measure in tenths of an MOA? Is there a reticle out there that you like which has such definition?
