    FN Mauser help

The sears models 50 and 51 were commercial Mauser 98's mad by FN and a real sleepers in terms a great hunting rifle for sometimes a great price, under $400. I think guns that have Sears on them scare people who are not aware of what they are away. I am building a hunting rifle in 280 AI on a...

Lets see and hear about your project rifles you are working on

Thanks, I will post after cerakote. Although, the Mauser 98 design is long in the tooth I like them for hunting up to midrange after that there are platforms that do better for me.

Lets see and hear about your project rifles you are working on

After working on some tooling last week I will be barreling my next favorite bear gun, a pre-interarms Zastava large ring mauser in 9.3 x 62, original barrel was a 8 mm, gun will be used for baited bear hunts so I am going with a 19.5 inch. In addition to the barrel I am installing a win 70...

Ouch! Send it back and maybe ask that they get that reamer sharpened (requalified), or better yet a new reamer.

Gunsmithing Viper barrel vise or bench vise with inserts??

I used my viper to pull barrel off of a mauser that was at least 50 years old with no slippage. The barrel was pretty snug I had tighter but not by much. Nothing between the barrel and the vise and no marks on the barrel.

    Lathe vibration

Is your motor single phase? If I recall correctly some Grizzly lather owners have swapped their single phase motors out for three phase and had the vibrations reduce.

    300PRC +P Load development

I assume you are shooting this outside, I ask because if you decide to shoot the rifle at higher temps than those of February you might want to dial back the powder charge. With no direct measurement of pressure you really have no idea what it is so you don't know how close you are to disaster...

6 DASHER pierced primers AND no case expansion

I would get the bolt bushed to reduce the gap between the bolt face and the firing pin. I have seen many Savages pierce small rifle primers, especially the 6.5 x 47 Lapuas, that were fine once the bolt was bushed and the firing pin turned down. GreTan has been the shop to get a bolt fixed up...

What type of malfunction is this - when bullet doesnt eject

I have a narrow field high intensity light on my reloading bench that I turn on after I have charged (or think I have) all the cases. I shine the light straight down and then go through the charged loads on the rack and touch each one and look down into the case, the light allows me to see the...

    Hodgdon Varget in 5lb containers?????

As far as I know a jug of Varget was always 8 pounds, Alliant has marketed 5 pound bottles of rifle powder.

    8.6 Creedmoor - Any updates?

Might be the ticket for a short barreled hunting rifle as long as recoil is manageable, I don't like hunting rifles that require ear pro in case I forget them in the excitement. I am not very recoil sensitive as I hunt with an unbraked 375 Ruger, but it has the benefit of a 19.5 barrel for...

New Custom Switch Barrel hunting rifle set up advice

If thinking about coastal brown bears you may want to put bigger holes in them then a .308 will. For big bears the parent case for the 300 PRC, 375 Ruger, is a great solution. My bear gun is a 375 Ruger and I only hunt black bears but really like two holes and two holes that are bigger. Plus...

What am i giving up with a Tikka vs custom actions?

You may lose some coolness factor on the shooting line, but a manbun and a pair of pink Uggs will get you all the lost coolness factor. Shoot what works for you and let others do the same, I have seen some Tikkas with aftermarket cutrifled barrels shoot as well as most any other.

Charging handles are getting out of hand

That is so you can operate with either foot, think Monty Python Search for Holy Grail (IIRC) where the knight kept losing appendages and saying "It's just a flesh wound". With this extended charging handle and a really opened up trigger guard you could carry on the fight if you shucked your...

    A new acquisition...

If it shoots as well as the first target shows with factory ammo I would not change the barrel out, develop a load to tighten that first group up a touch and shoot it until the group opens up. If it works don't fix it, wade

Did you know about Erik Cortina's other YouTube Channel?

I don't understand the need of some to not make any attempt ingest the information that an OP presents and then proceeds to trash the claims that they are making, especially when the information is given away for free. I think it is too easy to hide on the internet and make rash and sometimes...

Buddies 22 creed blew up…. Any ideas

44 grains Varget underneath a 175 SMK in a 308 case (M118LR Brass) is my go to round, or at least a starting point, for 1,000 yard steel plinking rounds in my 308's, I would think that the same charge in a lower capacity cartridge, smaller diameter bore, albeit a bullet about half the weight...
