Stupid Question Saturday..... Bushing Neck sizing and Mandrel. Which one first and why?

Ok, stupid question because I haven't really grasped the mandrel die concept yet.....I just picked up a Wilson Neck sizing mandrel die and a 6.5mm and a 6mm (for a future 6CM build that is in progress). From reading here as well as loading mentor saying the same - the order of the neck sizing...

    6.5 CM Neck Tension Question

Agree. My Lapua loaded OD dimensions typically run in the .2935 range and and I run a .292 bushing for the bolt gun and a .291 for the gas gun. There is plenty of neck tension there. I'm using a Mitutoyo digital caliper.

    Neck tension-what's next?

I FL size every time with a Body die for both my gas gun and bolt gun. Long ago, I started with just Neck sizing and I seem to recall 2, maybe 3, firings before needing to FL and bump the shoulders. After reading a lot of the explanations for why FL sizing everytime is better here on the Hide...

    .260 Remington

I'm also running a +2 gas system with both the JP Variable mass BCG and the Silent capture spring. And an adjustable gas port. Even with all of that, I found that anything much over 2810 for the 130s was still beating the brass and the BCG up. Would love to know what your 130 and 140 loads...

    Neck tension-what's next?

On a similar subject, My recent load process was to FL size with a Redding bushing die. I had previously used a Body die first and then a neck bushing die to do the necks. I switched to the FL Bushing to save a step. I just recently switched back to the body die after buying a Hornady...

    Neck tension-what's next?

I'm not sure I agree with Bushing dies can't resize the entire neck. I have a Redding Micrometer neck die and I set it down so that you when you gently run the press up, can feel the die just touch the shoulder. I then back it out in tiny increments until the handle is all the way down (press...

    Neck tension-what's next?

So.... I've had to process my brass differently for the Bolt and the gas gun. I've been running Lapua in my bolt gun (AI-AT Gradous cut Bartlein Barrel) for several years now with un-turned necks. However, I've had to very slightly turn down the necks on the lapua brass I shoot in the gas gun...

    Neck tension-what's next?

I'm using the same setup - Redding bushing neck die and I use a .292 with Lapua brass in my Bolt gun and .291 in the gas gun. I feel like I'm getting plenty of neck tension and both are shooting under .5 inch with single digit SD's. Also I've just started using a Wilson inside neck mandrel...

    .260 Remington

After much laborious effort and chasing my tail because I started too high, I finally settled on a Berger 130 AR Hybrid load with IMR 4451 and virgin Lapua brass that repeated for the new .260 gasser. It was a 111F when I shot it 2 days ago. It will be interesting to see how it shoots in the...

Best bullets for a .260 Gasser?

Thank you. I’ve been wanting to try the 139s and see how they doI can’t seem to find any 136 Scenar-L. I’m running a 22” JP. if you don’t mind, can you share your load for the 139s? Powder, charge wt, brass, OAL, etc?

Best bullets for a .260 Gasser?

Has anyone shot Berger 140 Hybrids or 139 Scenars in a .260 Gas gun? My go to bullet is the 130 AR Hybrids, but I'm about to run out and they are hard to find right now. However, I've got plenty of the 140s Hybrids and 139 Scenars. I was just afraid the bullets would be too long for mag...

Training Courses Anyone attend the Front Sight Precision Rifle course?

I'm trying to remember if they did. They definitely checked it on the practical rifle, but I don't recall whether they did for the Rifle Marksman. And same as of no use of a gauge. I think they are just trying to make sure the trigger is not some ridiculous lightweight breathe on it type...

Training Courses Anyone attend the Front Sight Precision Rifle course?

Yes, but the only round check they do is on day 1 check in where they run a magnet over the bullets to check for steel cores. After that, you can run anything you want. Not that I've done that, of course ;). But I've heard about it happening. Just saying.

Training Courses Anyone attend the Front Sight Precision Rifle course?

I personally would go AR. The guys I saw try to do that course with a Bolt really struggled. There are some timed stages on the skills test and a bolt really puts you at a major disadvantage unless you are a top PRS competitor type shooter who can run a bolt as fast as a gasser. A decently...

Help with interpreting an OCW & Seating depth test

Interesting - I would have thought that's counter-intuitive to not wanting to heat up the barrel or letting rounds cook in the chamber while you're lining up your next shot. I could see it for a Bolt gun, because you don't have to chamber the round until you're ready. But no such luxury in a...
