Hunting calibers and barrel life: 223 vs 243 vs 22-250

It's been their law for quite awhile now. I posted on the dangers of this law going across the nation with some push back on here. Imagine a complete lead bullet ban across the nation and what that would do to ammo prices. IMO you can kiss 2A rights goodbye if that happens.

Actually I see a ton of lead free .224 bullets out there now. Here's a small sample.

While hunting in CA you must use lead free bullets.

Out in the wild they look much bigger than they are. One reason is they flatten themselves out so they look really wide. Even the small ones could do damage lol

I'd get the binos first, there are some cheap rangefinders available. Or do it old school and map out your area and make notes of the distances prior to shooting. Also I forgot about CA lead free requirements. I think I'd go larger bore and use light monos going fast out to 500 yards.

This is the biggest one I've shot so far. 659 yard cold bore with my 260 AI. I had to watch it for awhile with my binos. I could tell if it was a strange looking dog or what because it was pretty big.

Typically the largest a male can get is around 33 lbs so a 70 lb one is a monster. I wouldn't want to tangle with even a small one. Next time shoot them. the ranchers in the area will thank you. One of the local cowboys here took a spill last year when his horse stepped into one of the badger...

But here lies the problem. During any big game hunting season I can't be out hunting varmints with a centerfire firearm. There is some debate on that, but I don't want to push it. So a good part of the year I'm not out there hunting yotes/ badgers.

Not a coyote, but I got him while I was out hunting coyotes. I spotted three yotes but I didn't take a shot. I couldn't get an accurate read on any of them with my rangefinder, and they were all on the move once I spotted them. So I started shooting rats because it was close to time to head back...

Hunting calibers and barrel life: 223 vs 243 vs 22-250

There are a lot of factors we need to know like the range you'll most likely be hunting? Are you calling coyotes in so a closer shot (100-300 yard) is more likely? Do you already have a rangefinder? Are you planning of keeping the pelts. I was just out coyote hunting yesterday. I hunt BLM...

Prs rifles beginner/budget and if the remington 700 is worth getting off the shelf in 2024?

My Timney Impact broke clean but at 3lbs 12 oz. So I installed a cheap Walker trigger. I adjusted it down to 2 1/4 lbs. I might play with it some more after a few range sessions.

Prs rifles beginner/budget and if the remington 700 is worth getting off the shelf in 2024?

I looked online and Turner's Outdoorsman in So Cal carried match ammo for .223 rem, 6mm CM, 6.5 CM and 308 Win. Some of the .223 cost less but the others were pretty much the same per box. If I were the OP I'd go check out a local PRS match and see what most of the shooters used. That will give...

Prs rifles beginner/budget and if the remington 700 is worth getting off the shelf in 2024?

CNC after heat treat costs more because it's harder to do. The tooling costs more so that's passed on in the cost. In any case the new Remarms rifles cost more than the previous Remington 700's. I see them cut costs by making the jeweling on the bolts less refined. And their tupperware stocks...

I worked running swiss machines. Compared to manual lathes and the degree of consistency I'm not going to worry about semantics.

For a beginner I'd be concerned about getting decent glass than the rifle. More than likely you'll change or modify the rifle as you go along. The glass is more critical and you're either happy with what you get or look for an upgrade latter on.

My buddy's 300 WM bankruptcy era Rem 700 Long Range with our handloads. Considered the worst QC Remingtons.

Prs rifles beginner/budget and if the remington 700 is worth getting off the shelf in 2024?

I'm surprised that in So cal 6.5 CM match ammo is hard to find. It's been twenty years since I lived there but I'd expect Turner's or one of the other stores to carry it. 1000 yard ranges aren't plentiful either. I only know of two in the LA area and one in San Diego. So a fast twist .223 would...

I've also considered a Howa since the ones I've seen shoot well and seem to be well made. I've read reports from a well established GS that the actions are pretty much blue printed from the factory. The only issue is prefit barrels cost more because they have metric threads.
