.308 Federal GMM 168 grain Load

Last federal gmm 175 I pulled apart had 39.7 gr of what looked like AR-Comp. This was within the last year, with ammo that was produced fairly recently say within the last 2 years. Same charge of AR-Comp in Lapua brass gave me the same speed with a tighter es/sd. 2540 fps in several 20 inch bolt...

    Old Powder Warning

This was a known issue with vv 100 series powders. To my knowledge they have corrected it.

    2000 MR alternative

CFE 223 works well in .308 with 175’s. Getting around 2550 fps in 16 inch semi-autos. 2630 fps in 20 inch bolt guns. That’s with 45 grains in LC brass. Could probably go a bit higher but it shoots well as is. I think hodgdons data tops out at around 47 grains in Winchester brass.

An is this powder bad thread.........

If it smells of ether it’s likely still good. If it’s in the plastic not metal container I would have a hard time believing it had gone bad unless it was stored in an improper way. Did you have some leftover lube in the necks? That’s the only time I’ve seen extruded powder stick to a case neck.

    TAC powder in 7mm-08

Not sure how full your cases will be but TAC in my experience likes to be above 80-85% fill. Even in .308 I got huge es/sd numbers running 40.5 grains behind a 175 smk. Bumped it up to 42.5 and everything calmed down.

Sierra .308 175 GR. HPBT Gameking Performance

Nothing to do with length on these. When the smk yaws in the target it is because the nose becomes deformed in a not uniform way i.e. it bends at the point where there is no lead causing it to tumble or veer off course. I have seen them cause incredible damage on deer and pronghorn and I have...

Sierra .308 175 GR. HPBT Gameking Performance

New game king on the left, regular SMK on the right. Externally the only difference I could spot is the hp on the new game king is more uniform and slightly larger diameter. People have been taking small diameter drills to the smk for years, looks similar to that. I only shot them on paper at...

    Help, my 5.56 reloads suck

25.5 grains of H335 is the go to for 55 grain 556 ammo. Always had good luck with Tac and 77 smk’s

    ES inverse of accuracy

The CCI 200 primers probably aren’t doing you any favours. They are a fairly mild large rifle primer.

    AI AE MKII Barrel Source?

Anyone that makes AT barrels can spin you a barrel that will headspace properly on your AE provided the recoil lug has not been modified in any way. Over the years I have installed at least 4 AT barrels on old AE guns and have never had a problem. I wasn’t pulling them constantly or swapping...

    Which .308 Barrel

I have a PVA 9 twist in .308 on an old AE and it shoots everything from Speer 125 grain hp’s to Sierra 220’s into tiny little groups. Don't worry about being handicapped by the 9 twist.

    AIAE barrel nut

This part makes sense. I have re-barreled two ae rifles with at barrels and did not have any issues. Screwed them on and torqued them. Checked headspace and both were good to go.

    AIAE barrel nut

I was aware of that. I just figured most people would prefer a shouldered prefit over a barrel nut.

    AIAE barrel nut

Why a barrel nut? AT barrels are reverse compatible with the AE. Just so you don’t have to remove the action from the chassis?

Trying to develop a safe load for my .308, need help

I’ve had good luck with cfe223 and light bullets in the .308. 52.5 grains, a 125 Speer tnt, with federal brass and Cci #34 primers. Velocity out of a 16 inch lmt are right at 2920 fps. It shoots well out of multiple firearms too.

What contributes to ES and SD beside the obvious?

Load data for the initial question consisted of Norma 30-06 brass necked up in two steps. Once through a .338-06 die and then the .35 Whelen die. Brass was new and not fireformed. Powder was 60 grains of AR-Comp dispensed through a chargemaster supreme, bullet was a 200 grain Barnes TTSX seated...

What contributes to ES and SD beside the obvious?

Thank you for such an insightful response DocRDS. I should have listed the SD numbers in my initial post. The Ruger was like 17.6 and 19.5 for each of the two 5 round strings with nothing I would call an extreme outlier for any of the shots. I don’t recall the SD for the Pacnor. Don’t have my...

What contributes to ES and SD beside the obvious?

Thanks for taking a stab at it. I know the two are different in the ways the Ruger has a looser chamber and more freebore. Maybe that is what is causing the difference.
