    1000 Yard Setup

I recently acquired a Rem 700 5R, dropped it in an AICS AX chassis and use AX detachable magazines. The stock it came with kept the mag box and hinged floor plate. Rifle shoots under 0.5" at 100 yards with several loads. I'll be trying to stretch its legs to 1,000 yards this season. BTW, it...

Does anyone know where I can get AW mags

Try Mile High Shooting Accessories in Erie, CO. I believe they are a supporter of the Hide. I saw at least one AW magazine there this morning. Great folks to do business with. Regards, Harry

A few questions about smithing and cost

IMHO, good glass comes right after a good stock. The X-Mark Pro trigger is a bit heavy but usually crisp and can be improved with standard adjustment. I guess I feel (for me) the brake and the bolt knob are secondary...stability of the barreled action, good sights and good trigger are the...

A few questions about smithing and cost

I just got a Rem 700 5R and dropped it into an AICS AX chassis with no other work done. It shoots like a house afire, bone stock. My SPS-Varmint and SPS SS hunting rifle are both sub 0.75 MOA shooters, with the only changes being placed in Bell & Carlson Medalist stocks. Accordingly, I'd change...

Range Report on New Precision Rifle

I happened to stop up at Mile High this morning to pick up a few items and noticed some Hornady Superperformance .308 Win Match ammo with 178gr Match BTHP bullets. Just for grins, I grabbed a couple of boxes and stopped at the range on the way home to see if this barrel liked them. The pic below...

Range Report on New Precision Rifle

I used Hornady once-fired brass as well as some Federal once-fired brass. I have been very pleased with Hornady products, especially their A-MAX bullets. I have gotten great results with the A-MAXs, Sierra MatchKings and Nosler Custom Comps. Regards, Harry

Range Report on New Precision Rifle

Yes, it is. The stock appears to be a B&C M40 with bedding block and it was free-floated. I will be rebarreling a Rem 700 SPS SS down the road with a heavy barrel in either .260 Rem or 7mm-08 and bedding it in the stock. Regards, Harry

Range Report on New Precision Rifle

Thanks. My "former #1 is a Rem 700 SPS-Varmint glass bedded in a B&C Medalist A5, wearing a Vortex Viper PST 6.5-24x50 FFP. It's nearly as good a shooter but I just love the new set-up. I'm looking forward to stretching both their legs to 600 and 1,000 yards but I think the new rifle will take...

Range Report on New Precision Rifle

I posted two weeks ago that I had gotten a new rifle at Mile High Shooting Accessories of Erie, CO. Yesterday I finally sighted it in at 100 yards and tested a few of my match loads that I use in my former #1 precision rifle. The new rifle is: Remington 700 5R with factory-applied Cerakote...

Remington 700 .308win build. Ideas please!

I got an SPS Varmint in ..308 with 26" heavy barrel a few years ago. I had it bedded in a Bell and Carlson Medalist A5 stock, mounted a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP scope on it using Leupy STD rings and bases and adjusted the X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger. That's all...and it shoots like a house...

Decisions decisions... New to long range shooting

A reasonably wise former Texas Ranger once told me "It ain't the arrows, Tonto!" I try to keep that in mind. In dealing with your rifle, get the right optic for the use planned and necessary accessories to use it well. After that, shoot the heck out of it and, when you've worn out the barrel...

Issues with -- New Remington 700 308 target tactical VTR 5R 26" VTR

Sorry to hear of your problem. I just got a Rem 700 5R Tactical with 24" bbl...shoots like a house afire. Barreled action mounted in an AICS AX chassis...terrific set-up produces <0.5" groups at 100 yds FH

SPS VArmint Good Place to Start?

My no. 2 precision rifle started as a Rem 700 SPS-V with a 26" bbl. I had it glass-bedded in a B&C A5 stock and mounted a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA/MOA scope. It shoots like a house afire. As Jethro3898 wrote, your two best alternatives are a Rem or Savage. I have a Savage 116 with...

    Remington 5R 20" vs 24" advice coveted

If yours is like mine you're gonna love it. I picked up a 24" Rem M700 5R, factory Cerakoted, yesterday, and had it mounted in an AICS AX chassis, NightForce 20 MOA Picatinny rail, NF med. high (1.265") lightweight rings, a NightForce NXS c173 3-15x56 scope. The smith who set it up bore sighted...

Got a New Rifle, Had a Great Experience Today With Mile High Shooting Accessories

While I have looked at MHSA's website and checked their services, I had never done business with them nor been to their store even though I live only 42 miles south of them. Today I took a drive and ended up taking a plunge. I currently have only one precision rifle dedicated to target and...

I Looked at a GA Precision Rifle Yesterday...

John (IIRC), it was a beautiful rifle. If it will do 1/3" with FGMM, it will do even better with hand loads. Beautiful rifle...like I said, it's got me thinking...the cost difference between a GAP TRR and a Sako TRG just isn't very big. Cheers, and thanks for the look. FH
