Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

It looks like they've just got pretty firm neck tension, but no discernible crimp... not in the stuff I've looked at recently. But maybe others lots in times past may have been taper crimped just a bit... I can't say.

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

Greg, I wondered that too about the FC cases. I even thought for a while that they deliberately made their brass soft so you wouldn't be able to get too many reloads from it, and then have to buy more ammo... :) But maybe they just didn't want to mess with what was working so well. The...

Remington 9 1/2 Large Rifle Primer Misfires

I have not seen Remington primers fail, but then again they're not as commonly used as CCI and Federal around here. What we have seen (and I do see thousands of rounds fired every month) is this: CCI primers failed on more than a few occasions. In each case, I asked the shooter to let me...

trim and chamfer cases... really fast. :)

Well... you guys might sell me on it one of these days, as it does appear to have a nice following. I didn't know it chamfered too, so that's a big plus in the Giraud's favor. I think if a man had to make do with all of the LC milsurp stuff that's out there now, the Giraud would make life a...

trim and chamfer cases... really fast. :)

yeah... that Giraud is gonna run about 500 dollars if I understand their website right. I shoot bolt guns, and really don't end up with a lot of brass stretch, at least not before I might be replacing the brass anyway. I think the investment would be easier to justify in my own case if I were...

trim and chamfer cases... really fast. :)

Does it chamfer the cases in the same step? I'm asking out of ignorance, not trying to be rhetorical... just wondering.

trim and chamfer cases... really fast. :)

Here's a follow up video I did after turning a couple thousandths off of the case length gauge... Not to dissuade anyone from using whatever they may already have, if it's working--just presenting a very quick, low cost option to getting the job done. Once you get the rhythm going you can...

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

Steve... I do think the softer case necks is a plus for accuracy. New Winchester brass is kinda soft in the necks (they're actually just thinner than some other makes) so this helps... and annealing any brass, if you do it right seems to help accuracy as well. So yes, the FC cases deliver...

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

The lot that Steve Williams and I pulled down didn't vary at all... the charges were spot on. Even the loaded cartridges barely varied, as mentioned in the video. That doesn't speak for all of the lots... it may be they have Monday ammo... and Friday ammo... I don't know. But I would expect...

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

Matching velocity in hopes of achieving the same level of accuracy does not work because barrel time can vary, even with the same MV. Think about two drag race cars... one accelerates faster, and hit top speed sooner than the other... it finishes with a faster 1/4 mile time... even though the...

trim and chamfer cases... really fast. :)

I was keeping the drill speed down to keep the spinning vice grips of death :) under control... It works pretty well... haven't had any issues to this point. I would like a way to mod the lock stud with a permanently attached lever to help make it easy to loosen, without having to attach the...

It's working for me just fine. :)

trim and chamfer cases... really fast. :)

I think this is going to end up being the way I process the milsurp brass I get in the future. I've got some tweaks to make it better (such as I'm gonna turn down the case length gauge a thousandth or two so it'll go in and out more easily)... Of course when you trim cases, you've got to...

    Gold metal match load

I have never tested the Hornady, other than to check it's internal volume (.308 brass, that is)... and it's not too far from FC as I recall... test the same charges as the FC cases, and see how it goes. Lake City and Federal hold about the same volume too, incidentally...

    Gold metal match load

The brass here is important, as to what powder charge you use. Federal brass is thick, and on the soft side... so less powder is needed for a given pressure level. If you're using Winchester brass, you'd end up at 42.2 grains of 4064 with the 175's, and 43.2 grains with the 168's. With Lapua...

Federal Premium 1x times fired cases

don't drive 'em like you stole 'em (even though you got them free) :)... and they'll work. The Federal brass alloy is different, to say the least. The brass is thicker, probably because of its softness it needs to be... and it will work harden faster than say, Winchester or Lapua. That means...

    OCW at 200 yards?

Do you have a picture of the target where the POI's were all within .1 inches at 100 yards? Group shape can also come into revealing the OCW... but at longer ranges, you'll get subtle influences from wind. Many do ladder tests and disregard the horizontal, but that assumes (incorrectly) that...

    Hornady concentricity tool

I wouldn't try to straighten the bullets... I think there might be some rare instances where it might be safe to try, and it might (*might*) help a tiny bit... but in the end, I think you'll be better off just working to get the runout down from the beginning of the loading process, rather than...

    Hornady concentricity tool

Yes, most likely... runout comes from different sources, and bending a bullet after it has been seated in hopes of making it all straight will loosen often neck tension, and that's going to mess up accuracy... I'd just use that gauge to check runout, and keep it under .005" if you can... but...
