Guardian Long Range Competition - Virginia - 2014

Just spoke with Gary Larson... he will post the score sheet later this evening. Pics will also follow. I have a few pics I'll post as well. As you review the score sheet, the stages are not ordered as you may have shot them, as depending on which team you were on, you shot different stages...

Guardian Long Range Competition - Virginia - 2014

The match was awesome, and many thanks to all who helped R/O and spot. Team Havoc did an outstanding job managing a couple of stages, and thanks to silent bushmaster for the targets for two of the stages--they worked great. :) Many photos will follow, with more updates and match rankings to be...

    308 brass sources?

Midway is keeping Lapua in stock for around 70 dollars for 100. Shop the exchange here, too... I've landed some good deals as of late. :) Dan

Sean, The July team match still has a couple (or three) slots... I've had a cancellation, so there may be 4 slots. If you're interested, shoot me an email and I'll get you registered. You can find the email addresses at BangSteel.com Dan

Guardian Long Range Competition - Virginia - 2014

The Bettin custom 338 is done! Some amazingly fortunate individual will win this amazingly awesome rifle! Getting closer to the 26th. :) The Nightforce scope which is mounted in the photo will be offered to the winner of the rifle for a very good price, by the way.

.30-06 load development for long range?

If you have a 10 twist barrel (which you should have), work up a strong load using 190 grain Sierra Matchkings, or even the 208 AMAX. If you run the 208 AMAX to 2700 fps from the 30-06 it'll be a supreme long range load. Just don't do this in the '03 Springfield, of course. :)

    Winchester 308 commercial rifle brass.

Black Hills may be a big part of the reason there's no factory Winchester component brass around... couple that with the regular Winchester ammo being produced, and there's just nothing left over to sell as component. I did find recently that Midway had some 270 Winchester brass (Winchester...

180 grain Nosler Accubonds on 308 win @ long range question

It's been a while, but when I last tested them their published BC of .500 on the 180 Ballistic Tips seems overly optimistic, as they dropped a lot more than they should have at 1000 yards. Other bullets tested at that same time were the 175 SMK and the Lapua 155 Scenar. My rifles has a 10...

Bad lot of Lapua Scenar 300 grain bullets

Send Lapua the photo and I'm sure they'll make things right. Kevin Thomas (a Lapua rep) is a member here, and he may check this thread and advise. While it may not affect accuracy to any noticeable extent, I'd rather have unblemished bullets--since that's what you paid for. Dan

    185gr Berger VLD + H-4350 OCW; 30-06

Great test, for sure. I agree 57 to 58 grains is going to be hard to beat. If I were to pick now, I'd probably go with 57.7 grains and as others have said, test it long range. :)

Lapua 308 Win Brass in Savage Model 10FP

Savage chambers are super-tight. Some would argue that they're too tight, but if you handload and bump the shoulder back to the right point, all will be well. You need to run the brass all the way into the sizing die. Just bringing up the press ram and tightening the die down to touch the...

Bad lot of CCI BR2 primers

The most common problem with them is the cup is too shallow, and they get driven forward in the primer pocket, and the firing pin can't push deep enough to hit the anvil. Take out the duds, and measure them... I find the bad ones are measuring .120", where a good primer should be .126" or very...

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

I tested it against Varget in -5 degrees F and it was perfect--no advantage to the Varget at all, even out to 1040 yards. Velocity (determined not from a chronograph which may or may not be right, but from actual bullet drop)--held strong for both powders. Haven't checked the hot weather...

    Ocw help

I agree, you're running pretty hot for a semi-auto rifle... I'd work around the 43 grain area looking for more consistency.

    LC brass/168 grs

I'd use 42.0 grains just in case you want to run them thru a semi-auto rifle. The high node should be 43.2, and the one under that 42.0 grains.

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

Great info on the FC military brass versus the commercial Gold Medal stuff. That stands to reason, and it's good to see it confirmed. Neck tension on the cases can be a big factor as to ES numbers, and accuracy too of course. When we see tight groups at 100 yards with wide velocity spreads...

New style Lee hand primer SUCKS!

I like the older unit better too... but I did finally get used to the new one, and it seems to "break in" (maybe)... or maybe I just got the hang of it... I don't know. But I primed 200 cases a couple nights ago and it went pretty smoothly.

    260 REM Best load thoughts?

Go to a Berger 130 VLD Match and 39.0 grains of IMR 4064 (or Varget)... I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised! :) If you're running 140's, cut the charge weight to 38.0 grains. This is in Remington or Lapua brass. Dan
