    Giving OCW a try

I have read Vaughn's book... while I do agree with much of it, some of it just doesn't make sense--maybe my problem, not his... His reasoning as to why moly coated bullets need more powder to make the same velocity, for instance. From reviewing countless targets of OCW load tests shot at 100...

    Ocw seating depth question

I use near exclusively FL dies and the Lee Collet die to neck size. If you're using Redding... I would stay away from the lighter bushings, preferring something that would give me enough neck tension to be sure bullets won't easily shift. I can't honestly tell you which Redding bushing dies...

    Ocw seating depth question

I would let the target be the judge--if things are working well, then just continue as you're doing. I had not heard before of that much bullet base to ogive variation, but to be honest I rarely check that. Try marking some of the cartridges where the ogive variance is highest, and see how...

    Ocw seating depth question

I would load the cartridges to whatever length they'll magazine feed at. With most Remington 700's that's going to be no longer than 2.800", maybe 2.810". If you make them too long, they will not magazine feed reliably--if at all. Some folks say they're not interested in magazine feeding...

    Giving OCW a try

Horizontal dispersion can be just as bad as vertical--as it's no more likely for a barrel to throw shots up and down as it is for it to throw them left/right... this is why we want to run the test at 100 yards initially, then interpret those results and come up with a potential good load recipe...

Any mimmic of Federal American Eagle 7.62 for M1A?

We're not 100 percent sure on the AA2520 in the .223 GMM loads--but it walks, talks, looks and smells like it. Ball powders meter more easily, and are probably cheaper for the big ammo makers to buy in bulk than are extrudes. W748, though not the same powder identically, would work where...

Short barrel 308 Win & Berger 185 Juggernaut?

You might be able to get close to 2600 with one of the new generation of "hold my beer and watch this" powders... but I wouldn't really wanna try it. :)

Temp sensitivity question for 308 powders.

I tested 4064 against Varget today, using OCW load recipes which were both 43.0 grains of powder behind 178 Hornady AMAX's in Winchester brass. These loads make the same muzzle velocity (right at 2600 fps) and shoot to the same POI at 100 yards...

    Giving OCW a try

I guess if the ammonia smell gets strong enough, it could kinda mess with your respiratory faculties... then everything would start going downhill from there. :D The only OCW I ever shot using irons was done with an old model 94 Winchester 30-30. I didn't know how it would go... but target...

    CCI Primers

Measure the thickness of those that didn't fire. Odds are that they're .005" shallow... they should be .125", and they'll probably be .120" or even .119"... I've been reporting this for nearly a year now, but it's largely been falling on deaf ears. It's a QC problem with the primers, for...

Would you be happy with this? Leave it alone? .260 140g hunting VLD

I think if you'll give 38.0 to 38.2 grains of Varget or IMR 4064 either one behind the 140's you'll be very pleased... Dan

Any mimmic of Federal American Eagle 7.62 for M1A?

oh wow... you nailed it there, I had forgotten that ATK had Speer... and of course Federal... and now Savage Arms, it turns out. Good point...

Any mimmic of Federal American Eagle 7.62 for M1A?

That's a little strange that Federal would use Speer match bullets instead of the Sierras... Speers cost more in most places, and Federal already has a working relationship with Sierra, of course. That said, they're probably using a ball powder here, as it's easier to meter and QC cost could...

Looking at getting a new scale...maybe digital?

The RCBS Ohaus scales are good scales in the 100 dollar range... the 1010 is a bit more money, but is a very nice unit. I still use an old 502 that works very well. As for accuracy... if you find that loading to the nearest tenth of a grain is necessary for your load recipe, you are shooting a...

Remington 9 1/2 Large Rifle Primer Misfires

10-4... that's good to hear. Let's hope that'll take care of things for you. If they're around .125" they should be GTG

Looking at getting a new scale...maybe digital?

Buy once, cry once... :) Denver Instruments Pi 603D Pinnacle Series 0 01g 600G Analytic Scale New | eBay Definitely a great scale. Sell the wife and kids and get one, you won't regret it. :P :D just razzin' and tweakin' the glitterati... I like beam scales, they've always...

    Rifle Scopes Nikon M308 "problem"

Back from the dead thread... but we did run into this issue with this Nikon mount on a customer's rifle over the weekend. We found that the mount will actually pivot as it sits on top of the picatinny rail, depending on whether you tighten the front screw more, or the back screw more...

Remington 9 1/2 Large Rifle Primer Misfires

As I mentioned earlier... if you'll measure the depth of the primer cup of the primers that did not fire, you'll probably find they're shallow. I wouldn't have my rifle altered unless or until I'd checked the primers. I went thru some CCI's that had this issue, and found 3 or 4 in a box of 100...
