    No, no, NO!!! The upper absolutely DOES matter, but not with respect to coatings, etc. It matters inasmuch as it is the foundation for your barrel, operating system, optics mounting, etc., etc. A "cheap" upper that isn't in spec will cause you more problems than having just spent a bit more...

    You can get crazy spending money on "coated" uppers be they in NiB, NiB-X, NP3, etc., but at the end of the day you are paying a premium for a feature set that is generally unnecessary for your average range toy, fun gun, bench rider, etc. Sure...they'll get you some enhanced lubricity...
