Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Damned good idea! What is the id of the holding sleeve?

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Ok, I get the idea that the tap sucks. Esp with tapered bushings. After going through this, I question the math needing .010" offset to induce .002" on the face. Secondly, I have issues with holding the action. I made a spider a while back to hold an AI 50 and encountered unbelievable readings...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Thanks for the insight Jon and Chad. I doubt I will abandon the manson tools because as I've said before. I'm happy with the results. Sure they might shoot better if done "right". I just can't justify spending the time to dial them in. It's kinda like cryo. The only guy that I know that can...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

I'd like to say the moral of this is you can meter meter and measure measure yourself to death. Question for you guys that true them in a spider. How do you get happy with the position of your indicating rod? Front and rear rings are rarely the same dia.

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Next I push with a little twisting the .702" mandrel in the rec. It's a tight fit. Indicate it in the 4 jaw, check the tailstock and it's .001" out. I say screw it and kiss the face. Check it and it's dead nuts on. Obviously I had to set it up in the orig. setup. It's out .005" More wtf...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

So I ream and run the tap into the rec. Set it up and my .002" turned into .0015". Wrote it off to stress or who knows. Cut the face and check it. Needle doesn't move. ;-) So I decide to flip the tap like my orig setup and it's out .001" WTF???? Next bright idea was the tap was bent. Turned it...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

To preface; the setup in the pics is a Manson tap in tapered bushings with the cutting end in the back of the rec. In agreement with wnroscoe the tapered bushings are a problem. Mainly because the rear rec. ring configuration causes the bushing to contact fully on the bottom because of the...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Interesting! .010" is a bunch. Kinda what I would expect. Killswitch; I could be bipolar. You are the second person that I know said that. Ignorance is bliss ;-) 300 s; I don't know how to check the threads. Could you enlighten? In the meantime, I'll work on what I went through today. I...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't have time now to go into what I learned today. Headed to the next door yankee's for some beers. Good catch wnroscoe. I was suspect of those bushings when I got the tooling. Aeon, I'll look at your numbers when I have more time. Full disclosure update...

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Yep. Note fresh cut center comment I made back there. As Edds said, All that will tell us is if they aren't aligned. I did remove the base to check the front rec. ring (which is not round as typical) and it has .008" runout.

Gunsmithing How do they do it?

Not my work. I hate to assume but the bbl I'm replacing is marked Pxxxxl custom. I know the pics suck but you can see the shiny "high" spot I'm indicating off of. Haven't verified it's high but the recoil lug hints at it. Maybe they just spun it and hit it with a file or sand paper. I don't...
