    Building a rifle for quasi-benchrest/F-class

I've been doing a lot of reading on this. The more I read, the more inadequate my $2k rifle budget becomes. BAT Action and a McMillan F-class stock should blow through that $2k and I'd still need a barrel, a trigger, and a gunsmith to put it all together. A Stiller action or blueprinted R700...

Change the stock. If you're so inclined, you can modify the trigger spring or the adjustment screw. Making any of those parts shorter will reduce the pressure on the trigger and reduce pull weight. The springs are cheap enough to replace if you go too short and end up with an unsafe or...

    Building a rifle for quasi-benchrest/F-class

Shoulda brought my 284 has been uttered by a few guys when the wind picks up around here, and it often does.

    Building a rifle for quasi-benchrest/F-class

Dude, duder, duderino. I'm just looking to have fun and step out from the bottom third. No intentions of travelling the country hustling F-class guys out of their lunch money. Probably end up with a Golden Eagle for optics.

Dedicated bench gun. Caliber will be either 6.5CM since I'm already setup for it, or maybe .284 Winchester.

    Building a rifle for quasi-benchrest/F-class

Huh? Bighorn actions are cock-on-open designs. Do you just mean they have a heavy bolt lift?

    Building a rifle for quasi-benchrest/F-class

Is this something I could do at home with basic hand tools? I've assembled an AR without blowing myself up. It seems like certain actions are more amenable to DIY than others.

Recommend a good pair of pants that doesn’t skinny jean the ankles...

Duluth Firehose Flex. I wear the Foreman version. They also come in jeans, carpenter, cargo, relaxed fit, fleece-lined, and slim fit. The Foreman is the closest to a traditional khaki, with slash-cut pockets and without loops or cargo pockets. The slash-cut pockets make it easy to get into...

Of course you do. Set it up with a scope and ammo. The factory stock won't make you cool on the interest, but it'll work just fine, and you won't care if it gets dragged along rocks and smacked against trees.

Just the rifle. I'm the psycho with a tango 6 on a Ruger American.

    Building a rifle for quasi-benchrest/F-class

My club shoots 600 yards off the bench at 600 yard F-class targets. Most of the winners shoot real F-class and use their F-class rifles with are typically single-shot bolt actions, no magazines, with straight cylinder contour barrels (~1.25" at the muzzle), and weights around 15-20 pounds...

    24. My 6.5s are 20 and 16.75 and the additional velocity would be nice when the wind picks up and I'm shooting at 600. Maybe one day I'll go deer hunting and appreciate the light weight of the 16.75.

Preferred target shape for shooting groups?

What is your preferred target shape for shooting groups on paper? Square? Diamond? Circle? Trapezoid? Rhombus? Decagon? I like diamonds and will bisect the diamond with my reticle, but I'm curious if there's something better.

    Bergers are NG??

Agreed. I've shot a bunch of Hornady blems in the past in .223 and 9mm. Blemishes included discolored jackets, cannelure in an odd location, and non-catalog item. Weight and shape always came out OK. It's a safety issue if a bullet 7 grains heavier is in the lot.
