    7 STW Load Help

My notes from Oct 18, 2020 using 140 gr Nos Acc Bnd moly 3.65", 70 gr IMR-4166, QL predicts 3223 fps 70kpsi I sighted in at 100 yards to hit a 1/2" dot, but got kicked in the eye 3 times with scope eyepiece cover. Length of pull on McMillan stock may be too short for me. 4) The 7mmSTW is a...

    Gunsmithing Career change to gunsmithing?

    1) When I was at the university of Washington engineering, I had to take a non engineering senior class, so I took administrative organization in the business department. A large male senior got up and spoke. He was on the UW football team on a scholarship. He said there were 100 colleges each...

    Gunsmithing Career change to gunsmithing?

The late great gunsmith Randy Ketchum of Lynnwood Guns was paying taxes on $30k/ year. He only had a 2 year community college degree, but based on his inventions and building a CAD system, I could have got him an engineering position for multiples of what he made.

Felt Recoil: High vs Low Pressure

Recoil pain is invariant with chamber peak pressure. The threshold of pain, I measure at ~ 20 psi skin pressure on the shoulder. 1) The most important thing in reducing pain is increasing area of the butt. A 200 pound woman walking on you bare foot is much more comfortable than a 100 pound...

6 br go / no go gauges

Anything that involves my younger brother's lathe, I buy the go gauge. But 6mmBR I have a lifetime supply of RP and Lapua brass that is new. Because my brother is not a 6mmBR person, I just use the new brass as the go gauge for my lathe and my reloading exclusively. Also anything I do not...

    IMR 4895

I got 32 pounds of IMR4895 when I started reloading over 20 years ago. I am mostly using IMR-4451 and some IMR-4166 right now with coatings for temp stability and Copper fouling. I WISH IMR would put those coatings on an IMR-4895 speed powder.

Gunsmithing Krieger barrel fouling badly with Barnes TSX

I bought some boxes of TSX bullets, but the Copper fouling was too much for me to deal with. I buy barrels from Bartlein, Krieger, Lilja, Shilen, Pac Nor, Benchmark, Douglas, Hart, Lothar Walther, etc. All premium lapped barrels will go longer without fouling than a budget barrel. I use...

    Gunsmithing Blueprinting Remington 700 cost

I have been on gun forums since before the www had the first gun list. Way back in the usenet days on 1992. Gun advice on the internet is as bad as any other advice. You don't need a $50k bass boat to catch bass. You don't need a trued action to get an aggregate of 0.5" (5) shot groups at 100...

Gunsmithing Barrel Vise and Action Wrench

I have been making barrel vises and action wrenches for years. 1) I learned that 1/2-13 bolts in any grade can snap in a barrel vise. I use 7/8-14 like reloading die threaded rod. 1/2-13 is fine for action wrenches that do not have to create huge forces of compression to increase the coefficient...

    6mm BR

My Rem700 bolt filled up with CCI450 divots. I was on a hunting trip when I sighted in and the rifle stopped working. I used a vise and a dime to disassemble the bolt and clean it out. I loaded some lighter loads and shot two antelope on opening morning.

Underwhelmed by my Redding Type-S FL Sizing Die and Bushing Performance

I wanted my usual dies, but where not available in 6.5-06, so I used the phone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I called up Forster and went around and around until they sent me a 25-06 Full length sizer die body honed out to a 0.292"...

    Gunsmithing Howa 1500 re-barrel

I have a Howa 270, but have not rebarrelled it yet. I made a chart of bolt action features from the simplest [Rem700 to the most complex 98 Mauser] The Howa is in the middle. The metric thread I have done while rebarreling Arisaka rifles. My lathe is a Precision Matthews 1236...

Correct twist rate for the Aguila 60 grain SSS round?

I don't think supersonic gas escapement [one atmosphere above ambient] is a function of twist rate.

Correct twist rate for the Aguila 60 grain SSS round?

If you put a fast twist barrel on a suppressed blowback 10/22 for SSS ammo, the noise will come out of the breech when the action opens. No amount of fooling with bolt mass and spring force can find a spot that does not jam and does not go bang out the breech with those short cases. Fast twist...

Underwhelmed by my Redding Type-S FL Sizing Die and Bushing Performance

I am also an engineer. I own 310 dies characterized in a spreadsheet. In 2009 I did a series of 223 tests with dedicated populations of brass each married to dies under test. This was a lot of shooting, just to test some dies. I started out thinking my Redding FL S die was the best. It cost the...
