    i think the 30-378 Weatherby Magnum, is a bit more energy than the 300 ultra, but only by 50-100 depending on the loading, so I'm sure there are sources that will put the ultra ahead of the weatherby

    I found my local Amsec dealer was within a few dollars of dean safes price, so I went with my local shop, who was able to do delivery, install, bolt down, complete turn-key service. If you don't have a local dealer who is reasonable on price, that might be a reason to go with the online-sellers...

    They sell non-retail powder from pulled-down ammo, with burn rates similar to...xxx yyy zzz. It is not the exact same as they commercial powder they compare it to, but it is generally quite similar.

    if there is a lot of ammo that fails quality control checks, then the whole lot gets pulled. Depending on the facility they may keep the brass and re-process it, but the pulled projectiles are almost never re-used.

    if you want a 338 bore, but can't burn all the powder in a 18" bbl, why not switch to a lower capacity 338 cartridge. I don't know how live/dead of a cartridge it is these days, but it would seem like a 338 RCM might be just what you are looking for.

    there are a bevy of 'short magnums' introduced in the early 2000's, and the 270/300 are the only ones that seem to show any staying power. I'm basing that on multiple companies still building rifles and cataloging ammo for the cartridge.

    limit 1 or 2 , so they get REALLY expensive with a full hazmat surcharge on 1k of primers.

    338 Lapua with 8700 or WC872 PLEASE???

    both of those powders are very slow, and more suited to 50BMG. Both are really too slow for 338LM, now that i'm home and have QL handy... 8700 generates about 35,000 psi, and 2300 FPS for a 300gr projectile
