I might be visiting a friend in Houston later this year. Thinking about bringing my rifle to bring him shooting. Anybody know of any good places to shoot in the greater Houston area? Willing to drive maybe an hour or two. I see there is a 1,000-yard range in Houston. But it's members only and there is zero contact info for the place. So that looks like a no-go. There is a 600-yard range in Houston, though. So that's an option. But kinda small. Seems like there is zero BLM/National Forest land to shoot on in Texas too. Surprising! But maybe not so surprising since most of the land is probably privately owned.

Hell, if anybody owns land in the area and would let us shoot, I'm sure we could work something out too.

Thanks!

American shooting center is your best bet for longish range shooting. They have a 300, 400, and 600 yard range. In order to shoot at 400 and beyond you have to "qualify" at 300. 5 (and only 5) shots on a 6" target- no other marks other than staple holes allowed. It's not too difficult early in the morning when the air is still, but there is generally a left to right breeze that increases as the day goes on.

Most of Texas is privately owned so there is little public land. Houston is population dense and sits on the coastal plain. Very flat and highly populated makes siting a long rifle range difficult...

Thanks, guys.

Yeah, those were to the two ranges I found. The 600-yard one and Bayou (which is private and won't let us shoot there).

seanh, that range north of Austin might be doable. Would be perfect. 1,000 yards and open to the public. Thanks!

Will also depend on what part of Houston you live in. There is another range between College Station and Navasota that goes out to 1100 yards, and that's also a private range.
