Okay, I'd like some input on what 1-4 scope to look at putting on my SIG 556 I just ordered. Used as a carbine optic, illuminated ret preferred, wouldn't be against a BDC ret for 5.56.

What I'm looking at right now is a USO SN-4 slim-line with JPJ1 BDC ret, red illum, cerakote FDE- $1740

That is about the most expensive I'd look at mounting on here. I don't think I'd be looking too seriously at anything lower than the Vortex Viper PST.

So lets hear some ideas on what to look at in that price range- especially value input from owners of the scopes suggested. This will go on the SIG rifle and will live under the back seat of my truck in an electronic gun lock mount.

Re: 1-4x scope

1-4x is nice, but I'm digging on the new Mark 6 1-6x coming out from Leupold, especially at the discount pricing.

Otherwise I'd be looking no further than a Elcan Spectr 1-4x switch view.

Re: 1-4x scope

I'm testing out a PST and an ELCAN Spectre right now on a 6.8 Carbine. Obviously 2 totally different price points and the glass is definately more clear on the ELCAN. However for the price that PST is holding up well and I have had no issues making shots out to 660yrds on torso sized targets.

Re: 1-4x scope

Im not a fan of other leatherwood stuff, but the CMR is a good bang for the buck. CMR yes, it's no Nightforce, but for the money it's great, it's only for a 1-4 scope. paying anything over $500 for a 4 power scope is overkill. the other scope that I would pick would be a Viper pst for this range.

Re: 1-4x scope

from your price point down in 1-4s,..

USO
NF
vortex razor
pride fowler
meopta
IOR pitbull 1&4
trijicon
SWFA
burris xtr
horus
vortex pst

...but keep in mind there are new 1-6/6.5/7 scopes well within your price range. the reason i would choose a 1-4 today would be some particular feature you really want or maybe a particularly large exit pupil, lighter weight, less length, trijicon fiber optic awesomeness,a horus reticle etc etc or whatever comparatively.

Very interested in hearing your thoughts on the BTR2 FFP being usable quickly on 1X like a red dot. How big does the "dot" appear and bright enough for TX sun....or if not, is the black of the "dot" big enough to use quickly? As I much prefer dots to halos/circles/horseshoes (the 'ol Aimpoing vs EOTech type of thing), I'm kind of restricted as I like having holdover references as well since we shoot 5-550 yards. Lots of steel at 100yards. Been using the SWFA SS1-4x for the past year, but looking to find a "dot" setup.

Thus, the Bushnell, Swaro Z6i, Meopta ZD kinda, and perhaps the upcoming Leupold Mark6 are all of interest for me, but primarily the Bushnell 1-6.5x.

Re: 1-4x scope

I run a viper pst 1-4x on my Lwrc spr in 5.56 and I am extremely pleased with it as well. I choose the pst because I couldn't wrap my head around spending a grand or more on such a low power magnification optic. I also wanted the generous eye relief so I could mount a pvs-14 behind it. I might add that it works extremely well with the 14s. I have successfully engaged steel poppers out to 400 yds with limited ambient light which is more than I expected to be able to do with it. The glass itself is impressively clear for the price. I must admit I have been looking at the 1-6 also. It would be nice to have a little more magnification without the loss of a compact optic. I just don't know if I'll get the bang out of the buck I'm spending for the reasons I just stated.

Re: 1-4x scope

Loving the discussion and suggestions! I hadn't even considered an Elcan... I'm not necessarily opposed to a 1-6x, but I put down 1-4x as a general starting point. Whatever I get will end up being 1x, the other end of the scale is negotiable.

BDC and 100% daylight visible illum. ret. would be awesome to have together... but I also realize at this time there are so few optics out there w the daylight visible illum. ret. that I can't really place that on my "must have" list.

Re: 1-4x scope

so,..must be $1740 or below,a 1-x type,specific 5.56 BDC reticle AND must also be true-bright-daylight-visible reticle.

here you go.

meopta 1-4x22 ZD. whether or not the chevrons are calibrated to your liking,is up to you.

Re: 1-4x scope

A 4X is fine for a .223, but why not go 6X, just wondering. Gives you a couple of more choices.

Regardless of brand, one of the things that I would look at on any choice is the objective diameter. A 21mm tube is a little small, esp. if you take it up to 6X with regards to the exit pupil diameter. (I know the scope internals may affect the diameter also.) A larger tube would be better as you increase the magnification.

To me, a large exit pupil diameter is just as important as reticle choice, finish, etc.

Not just brighter, larger eye box, very important for a carbine.

It's not like pussy, in this case bigger is better. Just a joke, you know what I mean.

Good Luck.
