I've seen alot of talk on the internet and i wanted a definate answer. Can you take a stock ruger 10/22 that fires a .22lr and convert it in to a semi auto .17HMR?

I stand corrected. A 10/22 to 17 HMR conversion requires that the original 10/22 be a 22 magnum, not just a 10/22.

No. But you can convert a 10/22 Magnum to shoot 17HMR.

That kit converts it to 17 Mach 2. Not 17 HMR.

No. But you can convert a 10/22 Magnum to shoot 17HMR.

Here's a link that shows a person who did it by swapping barrels from a 77/17, used a spacer for the barrel shank, and a shim for the V-block...

I think there are issues with the 17hmr with how fast the bolt recoils and thats why only one company makes a 17 auto. I had a Rem 597 in 17 and I had a round fire before it fully seated causing the magazine to blow out as well as the extractor. Remington bought my rifle back and soon after had a recall. Stick with a bolt gun. Being left handed I got peppered with brass when mine blew. Thank god for eye protection.

Magnum Research made an semi 17 HMR for a while, but I think they also had issues with pressure.
If you want or need an semi-auto 17 HMR, Volquartsen is the best choice and as far as I know the only choice right now. Other than being way up there on the price scale the Volquartsen rifles are extremely durable and accurate.

I am by no means an expert.
I think you can only turn a reg. 10/22 into a 17mach2. I have that exact little gun and it has been great. 2150 fps to about 2450fps give or take if u compare the two.
Now I think you can turn a 10/22 mag. into a 17 HMR.
The mach 2 works great and will make quick work of a small animal. I have even got a coyote ands bobcat with mine.

I have never owned a 10/22 magnum before, but the way I understand it, the broken extractor problem caused them to redesign their extractor with two claws and eventually discontinue the rifle.
