10/22 conversion to manual bolt action (long)

I once saw an accessory for sale that installed on a Ruger 10/22. It would not allow the bolt to cycle by means of firing a round. You had to manually rack the bolt each time.

I'm wanting to build a 22 rifle for a suppressed application, and was interested in the Aguila SSS ammo. I know a 1 in 9" twist barrel would do wonders. I've heard the 10/22 starts ejecting the case before the bullet has exited in this particular loading. Holding the bolt closed would fix some of this. Many suggest using a bolt action instead. Initial price of the bolt gun versus a 10/22 compounded with the many more available barrels is the reason I'm considering a 10/22.

I don't know...there are some really solid bolt action 22 that don't run too spendy, that also have a really solid aftermarket. Savage for one. Pick the right rifle (like a CZ varmint or American) and you can just thread the barrel for a suppressor.

77/22 takes the same barrels as 10/22

Are you sure? Volquartsen sells separate barrels for each. I presume there is a reason they do so???

The 77/22 barrels will fit the 10/22 but you must use a shim kit as the section on the barrel that slips into the receiver is longer on the 77/22 than the ones on the 10/22.

I looked into this and found a guy selling a small magnet that attached to the bolt right in the gap behind the charging handle and the receiver. You had to take it on-off everytime but for $5-$10 it was a deal. I have since bought a Savage MarkII that is insanely quiet with my can and haven't looked back.

The magnet should hold you over for a bit though.

Just get a bolt action, most of the 22's I sell are suppressed and are bolt actions for quietness, BUT my remi 597 sounds just like Hollywood depicts with the can on. As guns are so cheap over there just get one of each and switch the can over. Not too sure about the 60 gn sss though.

A similar conversion might be the way to salvage the Remington 597s in .17HMR that are being recalled. Possibly something on the order of a pivoting lever to engage the charging handle and keep it closed when firing.

The 10/22 barrel shoulder also has to be set back for a 77/22.

I'm a lefty, so I have a free hand to shoot with, you can hold the bolt shut with your thumb to see how it works out before you spend money on anything. It worked fine for me, but I can't tell you what the can dimensions would do for yours, the can I did it with was a Form 1 that was built large enough to suppress a 45-70 full bore load.

There's not enough recoil energy involved to be an issue that you might break a finger or anything. If you're worried about it, just hold your hand on it without gripping the stock and try it. This way you can let your hand float to get a feel for it.

There are at least two problems with the VQ Aguila barrels.
I had one of the VQ 1 in 9 twist Aguila barrels on my 10/22. I was never been able to get it to work better than 50%. The 60 gr Aguila case is to short and does not clear the bolt it just lands on the bolt face. The ejector for the 10/22 is built into the top feed-lip of the clip. Moving it forward slightly might help I am not sure because I have not tried it. I sort of gave up on it for now and cut the barrel in half to make a suppressed barrel for a CZ bolt action. The 60gr bullet works very well out of a suppressor it sounds like a pellet gun. The other problem with the barrel from VQ is it's too long 7" to 9" is the ideal barrel length for the Aguila 60gr round. With the 19-1/2" barrel the velocity drops because the barrel is to long.

A 10/22 most certainly does not need to have a second extractor installed in order to use a 77/22 barrel . You will however need the shim kit or to machine off the length of the barrel shank and possibly rechamber it . I was looking at a 10/22 rifle just a few days ago that had a Volquartzen 77/22 barrel installed on it and it was an absolute hammer . It belongs to Travis Gibson at MGM targets and was built by a good friend of mine .

JG started them & did some . I really Doubt the JG will ever go/do more into production from mailorder. I had a early one a few years back and I had another Proto. from a guy that worked on the original JG & now I got a 3rd one and been running it for about 1-1/2 years. the 1st two broke from fatigue as the metal temper hardening has to be just right and not to soft but not too Hard as to go brittle with it getting hammered everytime you pull the trigger.
The problem is not big ones but You are Only limited to Sub's & standard Vel. @ the max. for rounds fired on the Lock-up & also you give-up the Auto-Bolt Release plus the bolt stop mechanism/plate ' must ' be hardened to go the distance on the fatigue of the bolt pressure on it every time it has to stop it. I think the biggest hurtle was long term fatigue on the plate over time. The last one I got is laser-cut and hardened/tempered just right and is not brittle or too soft. It is going strong and is going the distance so far it looks GTG and I am shooting it 5 days a week.
A drop-in 10/22 Bolt-Stop plate for the 10/22 trigger group sounds easy and simple . as RUGER 10/22 is NOT known for being precision Spec tight tolerance for the Bolt- (trigger group)TG & the Receiver & all of them are Different and sloppy as Fuck. So Even though the manufacture makes the Bolt-Lock plate Laser cut to exact Spec every time. It's a little handwork fitting after installation inside the TG for precision lock-up against the Bolt on about every 10/22 .

It's a pretty sweet option to have the ability to go single-shot anytime you desire especially if you are Suppressed & then go back Semi-action .The bolt-lock for 10-22 is not for sale anywhere as far as I know . The guys That do-up Rimfire Technologies are pretty kickass dudes and I have had the pleasure of knowing them for a time now. They have been threatening for a while to bring the Finished Final working design For Sales. They got it. They got the bugs worked-out and do a laser-cut temper hardened and good working Bolt-stop plate for the 10/22. It will eventually (i think) come out . It could ?, be to much a Big Pain in the Ass . There has to be a solid money making demand for them to go to the trouble of doing it .

it's just the way the bolt stop is pushed-up and locks into the backside of the bolt on the radius cut bottom-edge & that is on constant stress on every round fired . plus+ added stress on the TG housing and the pin that slides threw the lock-plate & hold it in the TG . I had one stop-plate break on just after a few bricks of subsonic match .
Just put your finger strait with finger tip on your 10/22 Bolt hamdle when it is closed and loaded. Then fire a round off holding Bolt closed using your finger tip. That streess adds up pretty good when it is just concentrated on a pin-point surface area that the Lock stop-plate uses in touching and holding the Bolt closed . Even subsonic rimfire ammo has a pretty sharp energy on the bolt pushback for cycle .
Bolt hold-open 10/22 option is not for everyone. IMHO you should tune the 10/22 to run @ it's peak semi-auto function . Tuning your bolt with a spring/guide Rod, is a good idea and (I do) have mine tuned with spring-rod-handle exclusively for running subsonic ammo in 'semi-auto' for 100% reliability.
( imho) & for Me. I am looking for the best of both worlds with a semi-auto subsonic match & being able to bolt-lock to single fire with the suppressor. I am No 10/22 expert But for me and the Dozen or more 10/22's builds I have done over the years. I have Never shot a round of hyper vel. rimfire from any of them. for me, I only shot subsonics rimfire . So it all really depends on what your particular Needs & Wants are going to be on your 10/22 & with what ever Ammo your build chooses to eat accurately to your needs .

Getting away from an internal TG bolt closed modification. I have seen guys do a Bolt Lock Plate. little metal plate, cut and trimmed to fit the shape of the receiver extraction port. A plate cut and trimmed to fit in the slot and holding against the back of the bolt handle closed. that is manually placed in and out for single shot on the 10/22 . & You just epoxy a little cobalt magnet to the outside of plate and that magnetically holds/sticks it in position from falling off the Bolt and holding it into the extraction port & against the Bolt-handle when it is fired. That is external mod. for Bolt-hold closed & It works great. & last forever & is easy to do.
