10/22 Mag Feed Issues

I have a Ruger 10/22 carbine, all stock. Both of my factory Ruger rotary mags are jamming up and won't feed reliably at all. I have tried Remington golds, Remington thunderbolts, Winchester bulk. I haven't tried CCI yet but those three are all jamming up on my inside the bag and don't rotate up to bolt level.

I bought a 30 round magazine to try a different style feed system for those bullets but I am finding that it absolutely hates Winchesters and the Remingtons have it where they will feed into the chamber but the bolt isn't slamming forward hard enough. The result is that the round is chambered but when I pull the trigger I get a click and the round does not go off. There is a faint strike on the rim but either not enough to ignite the round, or the ammo is getting cheaper.

What do you guys suggest? Should I get a new spring for the bolt carrier? Since the 10/22s dont have a feed ramp and rely entirely on the magazine, I keep getting screwed over ever 2 to 3 shots.

High velocity CCIs feed alright because it slams the bolt back hard enough but everything else is consistently giving me issues.

What do you suppose is the problem? Ammo, gun, or magazine?

Re: 10/22 Mag Feed Issues

Yea I don't think it is under warranty anymore, it is one of the older models that still has the aluminum hardware and is probably about 15 years old. I might try a new firing pin after taking the thing apart and cleaning it.

Re: 10/22 Mag Feed Issues

Try soaking your bolt in some fuel oil or lighter fluid, debris could get in to firing pin channel and lift up the pin giving light strikes....have your bolt reworked, pinning the firing pin and headspaced correctly...if you have taken it apart, make sure the C-clip that holds the spring on the trigger plunger is facing up...the part that goes to the hole in the back of the trigger housing. Don't use the ammo that you have listed except for CCI..it is dirty and inconsistant...Stick with the Ruger mags and clean the ones you have...just a start...good luck!

Re: 10/22 Mag Feed Issues

None of that has to do with how rounds cycle thru the mag - you said that the mags weren't rotating the cartridges up ? Take 'em apart and clean 'em - there is how to, etc. on rimfirecentral

Re: 10/22 Mag Feed Issues

I took both of the mags apart and tightened the spring tension further when putting them back together just to give them a bit more force...still not rotating the rounds up to top.

Point of impact, for about $12, you can get a new Ruger rotary mag. I'd try that first. Although the mags do get dirty and do need cleaning, this is not something that needs to be done often. The mags are made of plastic and they do wear out. I don't know what wears out, but I've had a couple that gave me trouble after many years of use. i figured that I got my money's worth and threw the away.

As for the the new mag feeding but the bolt not going far enough forward, you can check a couple of things. First, I know the rifle is old, but I have one that's about as old as yours and I'm still running the stock spring in it. Still, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change it just to say you did. It is old.

What you should also check is to make sure that the V-block didn't come loose. Just look at the breech end of the barrel where it goes into the receiver. There should be no gap between the shoulder of the barrel and the receiver.
