I have got some deep scratches on a 10/22 I am redoing. Steel wool and Flitz is not working. What is the best way to get scratches out of an aluminum receiver?
I sanded out and polished several with deep scratches. Started with 240 grit, then moved to 400, 600, then wet sanded with 1000 and hit it with the buffing wheel. If the 240 grit doesn't take out the scratches, I would fill them and cerakote or other finish.
I was pleased with how it turned out. I have put a stainless barrel and new stock and everything looked fine except for the receiver. I used several different wheels for the dremel and now it matches the rest of the rifle very well. I wanted to avoid ceracoat if all possible because if I ceracoated the receiver then I was going to have to do the same to the barrel to make it match. It is more shiny and polished now but that is fine because the barrel is polished too.
