10.3 inch Geissele URGI Upper

Hey Guys,

I would like to get a 10.3 inch upper for size reasons, it packs down into a box I have an that is handy.

My question is that I know some of these setup's struggle with running suppressed out of the box and being that this is a great candidate for a can I want to know if the Geissele 10.3 inch upper is gtg with a can without the need of adding an adjustable gas block?

My 11.5 ran ok out of the box, however since then it now has a BRT dedicated suppressed tube and it is day/night difference now. I would look in to at least a 50/50 option from them but thats just me. Out of the box it was a bit gassy even with an CGS Helios which isnt a very high bp can. It now runs a polonium (high bp can) and there is very little gtf with that BRT tube.

This is helpful. But to understand you correctly you're saying that the rifle ran 100% suppressed but was gassy? I have had some experience with cheaper 10.5s and they need a gas block to slow them down.

Yes it cycled fine....it was just quite gassy.

I think the Geissele URG-I uppers are the best prefab milspec uppers you can buy. I have the 14.5" and it is astoundingly good. I have run the Surefire RC2 and RC3 on mine and it has functioned flawlessly. The RC3 is less gassy then the RC2 but the RC2 is manageable.

Agree with the above - The URG-I is pretty tough to beat.

Throw a HUXWRX Flow 556K on it. You'll be pleased with the results.

A friend has a 16" URG-I and a Flow 556K. I asked him if I could meet him at the range to see how it would do with a scope (NF NX8 2.5-20x50) and some match grade ammo (Federal GMM 73 Berger).

The first five-shot group was 1" at 100 yards, with four in 0.70". The second group of five was 0.65".

Side note - The rifle is 2 years old, has had several hundred rounds through it, and has never been cleaned.

Thanks guys, I have no doubt that they are great in those lengths and would expect nothing less. More so interested in there shorter variants and how they run suppressed. All the 10.5s (all be it cheap ones)I have been around needed some gas running to prevent over running the bolt and causing malfunctions.

The Crane gas port size spec for the 10.3" is .070, those are considered to be a good middle ground for 50/50 running with/without a can. If the G is at or smaller than that, I would guess that would work running a can.

Figure in the buffer system setup, ammo and can, it would be hard to say what combo would run 100%. I'd budget in an agb or BRT tube just to be sure.

The crane gas port size is what is on all the dd 10.3 barrels correct? or is it .080
What is the best buffer setup? H1 buffer? what spring is best?

All the DD 10.3" I've had were .070, I'd contact them or the seller just to confirm.

Any parts after that will be dependent on what works for you. I run a rifle system in my 18", the short .223 and 6.8 use a LWRC uciw. All of these run great with and w/o a can but all my cans are older technology.

Edit: My current barrels are from ARP.

Buy the rifle. Shoot the rifle. Then decide if tuning is necessary. The parts are readily available and shipping is generally sufficiently fast.

Unless you need a reason to build another rifle. That is what happens when I discover unused parts in a bin…

I run a couple 10.3's with a Surefire RC2 556 full size. Gas ports are 0.070".

Always have run an H2 buffer and standard carbine buffer spring with all ammos and never have had any problems whatsoever.

Thank you, that’s my expectations of this weapon system. Digging thru the internet is rough to find straight answers. I know Mk 18s work but the guys I know that have used them were issued them and don’t give a shit about the specifics they just cared if they worked and they did.

You are making this too hard. I have a DD MK18 circa 2011 with 18k rounds on it. The changes made were actually when I put a can on it(rc2). It increased back pressure to the point that the bcg was cycling so fast that sometimes it would not strip rounds. I bought an H2 and H3 buffer weight and tried them both, problem solved.

Geissele is extremely reputable, their URG-I stuff is bullet proof. It will work with a traditional can, it will work with a flow through can. If you have to tinker with it the problem will most likely be solved with a heavier buffer weight.

Pretty much any standard AR is going to be overgassed with a traditional (aka non-flow-through) can. Sandman being a .30 cal will be slightly helpful. The easiest tuning method is bumping up a weight or two in the buffer. After that, there are other options if needed.

My Geissele 11.5 (complete rifle) runs great with my rc2, it is not gassy at all. Now my 10.5 DD barrel needed some help.

I have a few 10.3 URGIs with RC2s. Never an issue outside of just overall gassy and prefer running without a can. But that's just the RC2 doing what it does. Can always go with an RC3.
