Rifle Scopes $1000 Scope

Hi guys,
Been out of the game for a while now. Just want some advice on what scope to get. I used to have the gen1 pst viper and love it. As of now I'm leaning towards the Gen 2 model. All I want the scope for is a good long range target gun. Itll go on my fn TSR XP 300wsm. Thanx guys!!
P.s. I'll prolly be lucky to find a 1000 yards. Of course, ya never know. I say that because I wander if I really need ffp or sfp. Thanx again

Don’t leave out the Nightforce SHV or Ares BTR. I personally think both are better than the Vortex.

Negative, the gen 2 pst is made in the Philippines.

That being said, I own a gen 2 pst and for the price it's a pretty good scope. However I'm wishing I would have gone with the ares Etr as, people have said the glass is better in the athlon.

My pst tracks great and I love the turrets, but I feel the glass at the higher magnification (20x-25x) falls off considerably, and leaves more to be desired.

UPS arrived at the house just before lunch with mine. I mounted on a ctr and sighted it in. I shot it out to 700 yards real quick before heading back to work. It looks like its going to be a keeper.

Magnetic is correct. The Tract Toric is in a whole different class of optic from the Viper and will still fit your 30mm rings. It is a Japanese made scope also. I have two of them and they are my favorite scopes and I have some scopes that cost nearly 3x what the Toric cost.

That being said every review I have read from people, they flat out love them.

The Steiner P4Xi is an awesome optic. I have the original 4-16 Military, and the P4 has a better reticle with good turrets, and is easy to get behind with forgiving eye relief. I don't think there is a better scope for $1k.

Well guys, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Viper PST Gen 2 5-25x50 EBR4 MOA, from the Sportsmansguide. Got it for $899, but after shipping and taxes- even shipping taxes lol, she was still under a grand. And, I did this for a couple reasons, #1, I already have some nice 30mm rings, and with SG, I don't have to pay all of it up front. I make 4 payments. What's really cool though, is I made the 1st payemt last night they will go ahead and send me the scope. Plus, Vortex has a very solid warranty. At any rate, just really wanna thank everyone for helping me. I truly appreciate it.

Well guys. Very embarrassing, but I just realized this is an sfp scope. I'll be cancelling shortly.
However, the most I'll prolly really ever shoot is maybe 500 or 600 yards max. Most will be 400 yards and under. Is ffp all that important?
And, does the ffp version have better glass or better features than the sfp version?

Is ffp all that important?

FFP vs SFP has less to do with distance and more to do with intended use and shooting style. Do you typically shoot on max power at these distances or do you prefer to dial it down a bit? Do you dial for wind or just hold off? If you prefer to shoot at 25x all the time and dial for wind then no, it won't matter much. If you use 25x for load development and then dial down to 16-24x for shooting steel or like to use the reticle for wind holds then the FFP will be useful. Most on the forum will probably say go FFP but is really is a personal preference. Since your intended use is target shooting at under 600 yds I would say get the FFP.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I don't necessarily agree with this...

Yes, you can SEE the reticle better, but usability with SFP is a concern that your markings on your reticle are not true anymore. Unless you're on that exact power where the marks are double what they normally are, it's anyone's guess (on the clock) what they actually subtend to.

I think that's the deal breaker for me, personally. By using FFP, I'm keeping everything simple. In regards to usability at 5-10x, I find myself able to use the hashes at about 10x. If I'm at 5x, I'm not really worried about a hold that I would need .1 or .2 resolution for.

agreed. glass at high mag leaves a good bit to be desired...

Athlon has a great warranty should you run into any issues, albeit unlikely, They are definitely on par with Vortex in that department. just some peace of mind. If you go that route I recommend going to Doug from Cameraland on here. Stellar customer service.

To be fair, the value depends somewhat on what you value in a scope. For me it is tracking>glass>turrets>reticle. The turret feel is on par with it's price range. The reticle is a basic mil hash. However, the glass quality is well above it's price range and what makes it awesome FOR ME. Shipping is free and if you are not 100% satisfied, they will send you a UPS label to return it.

PST2 is a good option. SWFA HD 5-20 is another good option. Athlon Cronus gen 1. Those are my 3 favorites in the $1k range.

I bought one of the Tract Toric’s earlier this year and was so happy with it I bought another a few weeks later. It seems like every time I look at another scope in the $1000-2000 price range I end up telling myself why would I buy that when I can just buy another Toric. I have been looking at both the Aries ETR and the Viper PST which I get mil/LE pricing on and the only reason I can think of for getting them is more magnification and different reticles. I think as I build new guns they will probably get a Toric on top though. I am really hoping Tract releases something with more magnification and a few different reticles at Shot this year. Based on my conversations with the owners of Tract it sound like they are really listening to their customers so I would guess something is in the works.
