1000 yrd rifle build help

I live about 40mins from a 1000yrd range and I want to build a bolt gun to get out there. I'm a new shooter with my black rifle and pistols and I need some help with my new precision build.

Caliber- I am thinking .308. Good for a non reloader, price isn't as bad as some of the others and readily available match ammo. My other thoughts were either .300wm or 7mm rem mag. Both have a higher BC. Leaning towards .300wm because I like the more tactical look to rifles. Would stepping up to .300wm be a big deal from.308. With a break on the muzzle, I don't know if recoil would be a big deal or not( I'm a big guy). Also price of ammo is what 5-10 dollars more for factory. I'm just spitballing here I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Rifle- I am already saving for optics and depending on which way I go it might be a while before I start saving for the rifle. That said I have 2 ways of going about it.

1st full custom build surgeon action, krieger bbl, jewl trigger, ax chassis and not being able to finish it until a year or so from now because it will take that long to save and build. Or buy a built rifle from either a forum group buy or a company like GAP. Again not shooting for another year do to having to save up.

2nd buy a savage or rem 700 and go shooting in 3months (after optic). Shoot the crap out of it and then start to upgrade w/ barrel trigger chassis and blue printing or Truing.

What would you do if you had to do it all over again save fore a year or more to shoot 1000yrds or buy that trusty rem 700 and start shooting in half the the time upgrading along the way?

You are correct, there are a lot better choices than 308 for 1000yd shooting, however, if you ever get in to competition then some are limited to certain calibers like F/TR class (.223 and .308 only). There is a lot more information about the 308 than most others and you can get plenty of off the shelf match grade ammo. If you reload, then that changes everything. You can load whatever you want to, match grade, for cheaper. It's a catch 22.

As far as the money, I wouldn't drop 4k on a custom if you're new to long range shooting, you might not like it (although most get addicted). Get a used Remmy for half the price of a new one, shoot the shit out of it and see if you like it. Get proficient, and then get a custom or whatever. Just my thoughts.

Also, I love the 300 win mag. However most shooting like your describing is in the prone, secondly on the bench, both of which can be hard on your shoulder unless your sporting a 24 lb rig. I know big guys that hate magnums, I'm small and they don't bother me. Everyone is different.

You're going to need more work than the rifle will. I'm new to this as well and recommend buying a rifle you can shoot now and start working on all of your fundamentals and skills.

A .25MOA rifle means nothing when you're a 2MOA shooter.

But mostly... I know I couldn't wait for over a year to finish a rifle. Get out there and shoot now.

Agreed, most all rifles will outshoot the shooter.

Just buy a savage lrp in 6.5cm and run factory 140amax loads. Save the rest of the money for good optics

This is actually great advice. The 6.5 CM is one of the most popular 1000 meter cartridges right now and hornady makes some great ammo for it. Then throw some quality optics on it and you are ready to rock and roll!

Go with the .308 or 6.5 creedmore. The 6.5 mimics the 300wm. Getting a 300wm for your first bolt action doesn't seem like a good idea.


And about your comment regarding tactical looks, you can make an rifle (regardless of caliber) look however you want. There are dozens and dozens of chassis' and stocks you can put a bolt action rifle into.
