Hunting & Fishing 10mm For Hog Hunting

I’m trying to think of something lightweight that I can take in the woods to put down hogs from 80 yards max, mostly 30-50 yards. I like the CMMG Banshee MK10. Right now I’m hunting with my AR10 in 308. I have a 6.8 SPC that’s definitely lighter but I can’t find any ammo for it. I only have maybe one box of 6.8 ammo in my safe so I haven’t been using it. Also I have the Bering Optics Hogster 35mm so it should go on the banshee no problem. Please give me some thoughts and opinions on this.

A 10mm should work fine with proper ammo. People use it for bears up here in Alaska. 44 mag wheel guns can give you rifle range performance (400 yards), most shooters are not capable of that though. That said, an unloaded Glock 10mm comes in at 10 ounces lighter than an unloaded S&W Mountain Gun, that and a lot of shooters prefer semiautos now as that is what they are familiar with.

Never mind, just looked up the Banshee and I'm thinking of a different style of pistol. With the barrel length of the Banshee it should give excellent performance. If it will cycle flat meplat, hardcasts such as Buffalo Bore I bet it will perform on game as far as you are willing to push it with bullet drop being the limiting factor.

I'd say keep what you have but if you can't find ammo then that's an issue. If it is truly 30-50 yards I think that 10mm AR would work if you are just wanting a new gun and can get the ammo. I have no experience with a 10mm but have killed hogs with a 45. My hogster returns to zero pretty well, so get that 10mm for the short range stuff and if you ever go somewhere with longer ranges, hopefully you have found ammo for the 6.8 and throw the hogster on the 6.8. If you don't have a 5.56 AR, I've killed a bunch of them with it and would use it over the 10mm unless you are just wanting the 10mm.

I have tried to figure out the best gun to carry while bow hunting for when the hogs come instead of deer and unfortunately found its my SBR 6.8 or SBR 556 which is just boring. I want it to be some cool 10mm, 44mag or something like that but suppressed SBR'd AR's just work too well.

I've got this pile of them on camera coming every day right now. I'm going to bring the garand out give it a go.

Yea I’d love to just use my 68 but I really don’t have enough ammo to even take it hunting maybe a few times.

With the 10mm choice, I would expect that you should be able to kill most hogs (especially with a clean CNS shot). However I wouldn't be surprised if a good percentage of the hogs you shot either will take multiple hits, or run off a hundred yards or further before expiring.

Several of the more popular thermal YouTube guys put out a couple of PCC videos and then abruptly stopped. It wasn't because they only had a rifle on loan for one or two nights...more like they got tired of editing out the parts where they plugged a hog multiple times only to lose it.

The .308 is definitely heavy, but I like recovered hogs more than I do speculating on how quickly they expired once they got into the brush...especially since 98 percent of my hunting is done alone. I walk 1-3 miles a night when I'm checking properties...a good sling makes the weight more manageable.

I've been on a Grendel kick as of late, but as soon as I'm done testing this batch of bullets I'll be switching to the. 308 again for a while.

I've got a 6.8 too, and it rocks for hogs...but yeah, ammo is crazy expensive right now. Even before the crunch, I could kill for less $ with the .308.

Suppressed 6.8 SBR is my go-to from 30-300 yds but I’ve been using this setup for many years and so have a good pile of ammo. If you have limited 6.8 ammo but a good supply of 10mm ammo I would say go for it with a Banshee or go Gucci with a B&T APC10. I sometimes carry a G20/RMR red dot for backup/cleanup when night hunting which works pretty effectively on pigs with Double Tapp or Underwood 200 gr ammo so I’m sure it’d work from a Banshee at close range. Other option that comes to mind if you have the ammo is maybe a 5.56 SBR?

Joking aside, it can work. But bullet selection, range, and impact location becomes much more critical.

Have you considered a 350 legend, 450 bushmaster... better stopping power than a 10mm and you can still find ammo. Another options is a lever fun in 45LC, 44 mag or my favorite 41 mag. Plento of capacity and heavier hitting than the 10mm. I use underwood 210gr JHP @1560 fps in my 41.
