I was going to use the A-Maxs in my 6.5-06 AI but now I'm undecided between them and the bergers. I am going to use this gun to shoot whitetails out to 600yds. The rifle has a shilen in 1:8 twist. Hornady is cheaper,,Berger has better BC. Will the BC matter that much at 600yds. I'm trying to decide before we cut the chamber becuase I want to match it to what ever bullet I'm gonna shoot. Thanks, Trent

Re: 140gr amaxs or Bergers...(6.5)

Here's a simple trajectory comparison between the two- (est 2950 fps and 10 mph wind)

140 VLD
Range Elev Wind Velocity Energy
(yards) (moa) (moa) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs)
0 --- --- 2950 2705.2
100 0 0.46 2800.2 2437.4
200 -1.4 0.93 2654 2189.6
300 -3.44 1.43 2511.8 1961.2
400 -5.78 1.97 2373.8 1751.6
500 -8.36 2.53 2240.1 1559.8
600 -11.19 3.12 2111 1385.3
700 -14.27 3.75 1986.7 1226.9
800 -17.63 4.42 1865.8 1082.2

140 A-max
Range Elev Wind Velocity Energy
(yards) (moa) (moa) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs)
0 --- --- 2950 2705.2
100 0 0.53 2777.6 2398.2
200 -1.44 1.08 2611.9 2120.6
300 -3.54 1.67 2452.6 1869.8
400 -5.98 2.29 2299.5 1643.6
500 -8.69 2.95 2151.8 1439.4
600 -11.7 3.65 2009.2 1254.8
700 -15.03 4.4 1872.4 1089.8
800 -18.71 5.2 1742.2 943.5

The VLD is over 1 MOA flatter and has 6.5" less wind drift for the same speed at 800 yards. For 600 yards, the difference is not as big. But the further you go out, the more the BC benefits you.
For the money, the A-max is a great bullet and it shoots very well. I like the VLD. They can be finiky to get to shoot well, but when you do, they are hard to beat. I use the 140 VLD in my 260 Rem and love it.
