DAMN - I can get a 155 SMK or Berger 155.5 over 3k with 46.x grains of Varget in a 308. 25 more grains of powder at a little over 1 fps per grain - now THAT'S efficiency.
I know there are hunters that make a big deal about shooting the 150 grain bullets in the 30 cal magnums saying how that the trajectory is. One guy the other day I was talking to was going on and on about his 300 Tejas, which is a 300 Weatherby improved. He was telling me how he was getting 2975 out of it with a 150 hunting bullet and how great it was.
I flipped open 3 loading books and showed him the same velocities with the same bullet in a standard 300 WM case.
The bottom line is that big case needs more resistance from the bullet in order to approach efficient use of the powder charge. Stick a 190 or 200 in it and let what magic of the 300WM exists do its thing. Shoot the 155s out of a 308 and save your powder and bore on the 300.
