I keep seeing 16 inch AR 10 guns for sale on GB, but I am not sure of the ranges or velocity lost on this length barrel. I currently own a JP 308 with a 22 inch barrel and use for all purposes including hunting. This gun is very accurate out to long ranges but is very heavy. I was thinking about buying the shorter barrel for hunting but am worried about long range shooting. Please provide pros and cons. Thanks

Re: 16" AR 10 barrel pros and cons

Some more experienced shooters say a 16" is fine to 800 yards.

You lose about 100-150 fps going from 20 to 16.

How far do you plan on shooting and do you plan on long range hunting? I would stick with the 20+ barrel if you plan on hunting past 500 yards.

Re: 16" AR 10 barrel pros and cons

My 16" AR10 from upper from GAP on an Eagle lower uses 39MOA to 1000 yards with factory ammo at sea level and it an absolute hammer at 800 yards.

The 308 as a bullet was only designed to be a 800m cartridge on a good day. However because we can, we push them further and faster as well we have better bullets, barrels, and powders than they did all those years ago, so things work much better today than they did even 10 years ago. So don't think any of the old rules of thumb apply.

16" is a perfect number for an semi auto 308, its a solid shooter at 800 yards under just about any condition, provided you feed it right.

I have 2 - 16" and 1 - 18" and couldn't be happier

Lowlight (as always) is 100% on.

You get a marginal velocity increase from the longer barrel which translates into a little better ballistics at longer ranges. Even with a slight reduction in velocity with the shorter barrel, you can still reach 800yds (and further) accurately and with enough energy to do the job as long as you are running appropriate bullets/loads.

Here is a video I did with my 16" POF 308, and the shots on the steel plate after the lesson teaser were done at 600 yards at CRC here in CO.

Awesome. What optic is that?

Nice to see it perform that well out to 600yards. Since this is basically a BDC reticle, i wonder how it performs compared against the NF 2.5-10 Low Velocity Reticle? My buddy has one and the glass is superb and the LV reticle perfectly matches 7.62 Nato to 600yards. Also it only weighs 19oz. Having that extra magnification i think would be nice and has 5&10mph windage hash marks.

Re: 16" AR 10 barrel pros and cons

Yes, it was the 5.56 model, which I have since removed from the POF. Initially I had the NF 3-15X USASF model scope on the rifle and wanted to try out the Elcan for this video.

Right now I have a 2.5-10X on the same rifle, Mil / Mil, etc.

Switching optics is easy, I wouldn't get wrapped around what I was using.

The Elcans are nice, they are definitely better suited for mid range rifle work. I think a 14.5" 308, maybe even the 12.5" 308 POF we have --- but once you start considering going past 400, maybe 500 yards, go to better optic more suited for the task. I do like the Elcan, I will say that, but not for a DM type role.

Great video LL, I think I got my answers for all questions on the 16" guns. I also have a POF in 223, i may just have to get another. I was looking at REPR too. Any thoughts?
