Range Report 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

I don't think many guys around here shoot a 168gr to 800yds...

I can shoot less than MOA at 550yds with 168gr SMK on a low wind day, but when I tried them at 800yds, they were flying everywhere.

I'm going to try 175gr SMK's next.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

Depends on chamber, factory rifle barrel, or custom barrel. I myself like 22" but I have seen some 16" barrels do very well out to 800 and beyond. Also depends on what your expectations are as well. You want to shoot the smallest group possible or are you looking to just ring the steel?

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

Surgeon Scalpel, 20" Bartlein barrel, 10:1 twist; at sea-level, Federal-168's (SMKs) make it to 800 yards consistently. Past that ... results vary.

Pretty much the same experience with a GAP Rock, 22" barrel, though the GAP is more consistent out to 1K. If you want to shoot past 800 and be consistent, try 175's.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

Thanks for the replies guys, I was looking at Broughton, Mike Rock or Hart. Maybe Bartlein too. Dunno what Bartlein offers. I think the 5C and 5R barrel setups are nice though as far as cleaning is concerned.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

if aour gonna be shooting out past 600 yards you might want to try either the sierra 175 gr match king or the hornady 178 a-max. a 168 gr bullet looses stability and will start key holing

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

well I was looking at 800 yards maximum. I'll try different ammo. Just wanted to see what everyone's experience has been. Would you recommend Mike Rock or Broughton?

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

I have had pretty good success with the Lapua 170gr bullets (BC=.525) p/n B746 in my PSS with 26" bbl 1:12 twist shooting at 1000yds .....I could not get the 168s to consistently stay supersonic at 1000, but they did great at 600. I tried a few different 175's but I dont think my 1:12 bbl is fast enough to stabilize them good.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

I have never had much of an issue making 168's fly out to 1K. Certainly no keyholes or anything. They get pushed around alot, but thats to be expected.

I am done with the 175's...the Lapua 155's are where it's at for me.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

I had superb accuracy with Bartlein and Broughton barrels, but can't on Rock.

I shoot 175smk, and my friend shot 168grs. As we shot more pass 800-1000 yards, he switched to 175smks too. They have a higher BC and retain more velocity at distance.

1 in 10" twist seems popular now, but I went with more traditional 1 in 11.25" which is more than enough to stabilize a 175gr.

18" is about as short as I would go, but I personally prefer a 22" barrel for 308win. If you are going to thread for a suppressor, than the shorter barrel makes sense.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

This was the first time out @ 800yds with my new LMT MWS...currently it's sporting a Rock 16" 1:10 CL barrel.

I'm shooting Hornady TAP Precision 168gr. Amax. When I did my part it was straight dialed in.

Re: 168gr + barrel length to 800 yards?

Hell withthe Berger 168gr hybrids you could go with a 18 and probably be good to 1000yds depending on conditions

Factory 20" Remington varmint contour barrel with 168 AMAX @ 45.0gr AR2208 - COAL 2.810" - 1104 yards no problems...

Don't read too much into the myths, the bullet shows you what it can do... Of course this is a stretch but it'll make it out there.
