Suppressors 17 HMR Suppressor

Two issues...

I have a Savage 17 HMR and am about to have it threaded 1/2 x 28.

I have Silencerco Sparrow SS waiting for approval from the ATF, I should have it in May or so...

I know .22 lr is a disaster through a sealed can such as my AAC SPR/M4. I wouldn't even consider it. But is 17 HMR a bad idea for the same reasons? Are the composition of 17 HMR bullets 'dirty' like .22 lr bullets? And since the 17 HMR has a muzzle velocity of 2200 to 2600 fps which is much faster than .22 lr would a centerfire designed baffle system suppress a 17 HMR better than my Sparrow?

Would it be harmful to the SPR/M4 to shoot 17 HMR through it?

...and if it is not harmful, which would suppress the round better?

The main issue with 22lr through a sealed can is the bullets being lead will have some of that lead be melted off and deposited in the suppressor. 17hmr uses jacketed bullets so that should not be a problem. As far as baffle design it has mostly to do with pressure at the muzzle as to what type of baffles works best. However I would just call up AAC and ask them.

I have a Savage 17 hmr, shortened to 16.5 threaded and run a SRT 17 hmax on it. No issues.

The Sparrow will silence the 17hmr better because of the end caps hole is smaller then the SPR/m4. Less gas escaping = less noise to your ears.

You can shoot 17hmr thru your SPR can, it wont do a whole lot but it will knock some of the boom down.

I would wait for that Sparrow SS though, you will be impressed.

the hornady 17gr 17hmr that i shoot through my volquartsen are pretty dirty. id just wait for the sparrow ss.

im going to be using a liberty essence for the can vs the 30p-1 or torch.

Something tells me you arent going to be blowing through thousands of rounds of 17hmr ammo, go for it, you arent going to damage a thing. Bet you wont even notice much of a difference in sound between the two when you get the sparrow.

I have shot my .17HMR through my AWC steel thundertrap and been very happy. I have a Ti Thundertap due to be stamped any day and I am sure I will like that better. I have a steel YHM mite that is rated for it but I have not tried it yet. PG

I shoot mine through a Spectre and it is nice!
