Hey guys I own a savage bmag 17 Winchester super magnum and I want to see what other people think about this caliber I know the Beamer gets a bad rap here and there but mine is a shooter also the 17 WSM caliber itself seems to have some problems with accuracy I just want to see what other people think of the caliber and the rifles are that are available

I own the heavy barrel option and I put a boyds stock on it the stock cost about $250 which I bedded the rifle in to using heat resistant JB Weld with metal flakes or shavings in one of the components of the epoxy it seems to have made some difference in the groups more like consistency as I would still shoot some very good groups before bedding but after bedding I got more consistency out of the rifle here are some of the groups that I shot after bedding

I put a Leupold old VX freedom 3-9x40 Scope on the rifle it cost about $225 I typically shoot groups with the bmag at around 60 yards which is fine because this rifle is so flat shooting that you could cite it in at nearly any range and it will be zeroed in to about 200 yards before it starts to drop it as a very flat shooting caliber I’m very interested to hear what other people have done with this caliber please add info to this thread very appreciated,Norman

Picked up a heavy barrel bmag with the Tupperware stock for 300 bucks.
It is an inexpensive, lightweight, farm field, critter gitter.
Turns most rodents into meat spray out to 250 yards.
With Winchester being the sole manufacturer of the 17wsm cartridges
it's unlikely it will ever be capable of consistent benchrest accuracy
but for center of rodent it gets the job done.
My cartridge of choice is the 15 grain NTX. 3300 fps no lead bullet
zips right along.
Terminal performance is as good on field vermin as it's heavier siblings.

With a barrel block rig, at 200 yards, it prints 4 inch groups for 50 shots at a single aimpoint.
That is equal to my results with the best offerings from Eley, Lapua and RWS in 22lr.
Half the size of those obtained with better 22wmr.

I think I am still the only 17wsm results posted for jbell's 6x5 at 200 yards.
In my case, 10x5.

I have a stainless heavy barrel BMag in a Boyd's Pro Varmint and a 1st Gen skinny barrel.
The skinny barrel leaves much to be desired. The heavy barrel is a good enough shooter.
The ammo inconsistency is the problem. Flyers abound.
I never shoot groups or dot drills with it. Just steel from 200-500yds. The little 20 & 15gr bullets really keep you on your game with wind calls.
It's a fun gun that doesn't break the bank to shoot.

Yeah I’ve had a few times where I get all different kinds of grouping and other times when I get flat consistency I believe you guys are right with it being a problem of ammo manufacturing but I like the gun good enough and it seems as if it will stay around long enough to make good improvements on it my rifle really prefers the 25 grain Winchester ammo I have two boxes of the 15 grain ammo by them that I haven’t tried yet another thing I learned about it is that it needs to be cleaned a lot more often than any rifle I’ve ever owned I wish it would shoot like an hmr with the knockdown power of a super mag
