I am looking to switch from my current load of

175 SMK
44gr Varget
2.80 OAL
LC Brass

It shoots good out of my rifle but looking to switch to 178amax using the same brass. I am not sure of my velocity but I'm thinking 2550-2600 from what I tested out of it awhile ago. Does anyone have a load built up or any info using LC brass as I have a ton of it. I just got some Rem brass that has been loaded 2 or 3 times but I only have about 140rds of it so I don't have enough to load for a big range day.

Thanks

Re: 178amax out of SPS TAC 20" Load data?

I dont know about LC brass but I am getting 3/4 MOA and 2600 fps with this load out of a 26" Remington 700P barrel:

Federal/Winchester brass
175 SMK
CCI-200's
44.5gr. Varget
2.810 OAL

I have tried the 178 AMAX @ 2.810" OAL with that load also and it gave me the same results.

My next time out with that rifle I will test 45gr. of Varget with a COAL of 2.850". I would really like to get 2650 out of this rifle while holding on to good accuracy. My experiences have shown factory Remington barrels to be pretty slow.

Just drop the 178 into that load or if you wanted to drop a little just go down to 43-43.5grns for safety with the LC brass.

The 178 AMAX and 175 SMK were pretty interchangeable as far as loads in my rifle. I do load the 178 AMAX about .020" off the lands though.

Another rifle did better a 44.0 with a 1 in 10 but the 43.3 did ok at 2550 fps out of it as well

Re: 178amax out of SPS TAC 20" Load data?

I loaded an 8 round ladder test from 42 to 44.4 in .3 gr increments seated .015 off the lands. I also loaded some 10 round strings of 43.0, 43.2 and 43.5 loaded to AICS mag length, which was 2.268 ogive if I recall right. All rounds loaded with Varget.

Last outting, I found 42.8 varget seated .015 off lands to shoot the best, 2in 5 shot group at 300 yards. This time I played with seating depth and we'll see how that goes. I'm sure they are flying slow as hell but not sure since I dont have a crono.

I also want to play with IMR 4064 but not sure about the temp sensitive powder.

I find the same.

Although I would suggest looking at the 178 BTHP. They are only marginally more expensive than the AMAX and have a better BC. I have 500 here waiting for me to shoot out the last of my AMAX.

Yea the SPS T is 1-12 twist. The reason I want to go to amax is a better hunting round. I have shot some hogs with the SMK s but they don't do near as good of job as the amax. That way I have 1 load I can use for everything from hunting to steel at a 1000yds.

Re: 178amax out of SPS TAC 20" Load data?

I am getting 2550fps with 43.4 of Varget in a Remington case with 178 Amax in my 18" OBR. Shot it out to 1200 in Aug with great results.

These groups were shot at 300 yards with a crosswind of 5-10 mph (left to right). All 178 Amax with Varget out of an AAC-SD. No FPS as I dont have a crono, bet there moving fairly slow.

This group was 42.8 Varget seated .015 off lands.
