I am just looking for some of your guys loads , and what OAL you are using. I would like to keep them in AI mags.

Also how fast you think you can push them out of a 22inch barrel.

thanks

thanks . I keep going back and forth between a 7-08 and a 308 for a duel use rifle ( hunting/ back up tactical comp rig).

If I could push the 185 vld's to about 2700fps and get a whole lot more barrel life out of a 308, it would be great.

But the 7-08's numbers are pretty impressive when you run a 168vld at 2700 through JBM.

Some matches only allow 308. You can hit 2700 fps with RL-17, but it isn't particularly temperature stable.

The best solution I found to the caliber dilemma is to have the rifle set-up as a switch barrel.

Re: 180-190 gr bullets in the 308

that is exactly why I am debating between the two . I know the 7-08 is better ballisticly.

I know that people are getting between 8-10000 rounds out of a 308 barrel ,and around 3-4000 with the 260's. I am not sure what a 7-08 will get maybe 4-6000 maybe less. I am trying to figure out if it is worth it or not.

I am also having a 6.5 x 47 or 260 built right now that will be my main rifle for matches. I will be selling my current match 308 to fund this med. weight duel porpose rifle (hunting backup match rifle). and am not sure I want 2 calibers that are hard on barrels.

Re: 180-190 gr bullets in the 308

here is one to think about.why don't you just make it a 6.5x47/260 like your other rifel.then you want have to buy 30 cal and 6.5.the 260 will do about anything you would ask it to do.that should make it alot easier for ya.it would for me.

Re: 180-190 gr bullets in the 308

my other rifle isnt a switch barrel. I just havent decided wich 6.5 I am going to go with. either 6.5x47 or 260. I am waiting for all the parts on that build.

I think I am going to go ahead and try the 7-08 . If I dont like it I can always rebarrel it in a couple of years.

I think the 7-08 will do anything the 308 can as far as taking game as a hunting rifle . and it will have a pretty good ballistic edge on the 308 as a backup match rifle.

Not only temp stability issues, but i'm suspecting that there are variances from lot to lot. I got a new lot of powder, and loaded everything the same and these loads were HOT, I picked up another 40fps average, kickin' the 208's out at 2620-2640 from the 20" barrel.

I like what RL-17 does for me, but i'm thinking about going back to 4064 and 178's. I may try the 4064 and 208's, but I don't think that i'll get decent velocities.
