im not an expert ,by any means , but my riflesmith / custom barrelmaker recomended the 1-8 twist for my 7mm saum and 180s our velocity should be similar around 2800- 3000 + depending on barrel length and loading .i find it does great great with the 162 a max . if you can i would hightly recommend going with the1-8 for the lr bullets . good shooting . adam

Good read there. He says you can almost get away with a 10 twist in good conditions. I dont want to push to make a 10tw work, and most 7mm rifles are built with 9.5tw, so I had to ask.
Im thinking if I really only shoot the 180s occationaly then 9.5 may not be to bad to play with in a factory rifle (to start with).

I have had 5 rifles in 7 WSM. They all had 1:9 twists which shot 180 Bergers & JLK's just fine. This was at an altitude of 400-700 ft above sea level.
