So, I’m about to build my first rifle and was looking for advise on what I should buy/ rent. Not sure if I want to buy all the pieces in case I want to swap out barrels later or not. I have a Bighorn TL3 in 6.5 man bun and a 20” Proof research prefit. Haven’t decided on a barrel break yet, but right now leaning towards a APA gen 3 little bastard or an Area 419 Hellfire break.

I’ve got a viper barrel vise, already.
What does everyone recommend for:
Go/ No Go Gauges
Action Wrenches

If I decide not to purchase everything, does anyone know where to rent the other items and how much?

Is there anything else I will need? And what is everyone using as far as break in supplies?
Lube, bore cleaner, rods, rod guides??

Thanks for everyone’s help and suggestions, Jim

I’d just buy a go gauge and use tape method for the no-go gauge. There’s different types of action wrench’s. So get whatever wrench the action maker sells or recommends. Use anti seize on the threads so you can remove it later on without problems. You can check 4d rentals.

I use only go gauges with shims made from a cheap feeler gauge as my no-go spacer. CLR for carbon cleaning and Sweets for copper. Get a carbon cleaning rod. There are nice rod guides but the cheap ones work just fine. I tend to use MS33 grease for most everything. Check out the Patriot Valley jet blast break... excellent performance and value.

For go no go gauge, Manson tools. You can buy both or as suggested above a piece of scotch tape on the back of a go gauge will suffice for a no go ( scotch tape is approximately 2 thousandths thick). As for action wrench, as also stated whatever they make specific for the action is always the best choice. Walk your way into the torque. Start at 40. Losses. Increase to 50 then loosen. Then 60 and repeat to your final torque. I personally usually do 60 ft lbs usually but do what ever is recommended. Point being you can’t just go zero to final. You gotta break the threads in too

I have an APA Gen III lil bastard and really like it. I bought my 6.5 CM gages from Northland Shooters supply. Both gages were like 60$. I preffer having both gages as apposed to the tape method for a no go. Just my opinion. Cant help with the wrench question. I have a 700 and use the NSS wrench.

I've used go/no go, go gauge and tape, and a fired case and tape they all worked fine. I've got apa and 419 brakes, they're both great. Muzzle brakes and More makes a good brake too and they're a bit cheaper.
