1ton Dodge axle question

wherever I may roam...
I know there are some truck guys here, what I'm wondering is if single wheel and dually axles are the same. I ask because I have a 93 CTD 4x4 dually that I want to turn into a single wheel. Any help is appreciated.

The newer dually axels are wider, or narrower, then the single axels variants. Cannot remember which, but I looked into converting my srw into a dually for towing, as in buying a set of dually wheels and the spacers for the fronts, but they said that if I did that the rear wheels would contact the frame.

Yes, & no. The axle is identical except for the width from end to end. The dually is wider so the massive backspacing of the dually wheel won't rub the leaf springs with the inner wheel. The pumpkins, & tube diameter are identical.

That is what I thought. A Dana 80 in the 1 ton dually and a Dana 70 in the 3/4 ton for a 90's model. The Dana 80 has a larger pumpkin and thicker axle tubes.
If you compare the dually versus SRW axle of the same model axle the wheel hub and drums are larger and the axles tubes are narrower, but typically the internals are the same...aside from axle shaft length.

The build sticker under the hood says I have a Dana 60 in front and a Dana 70 in the rear. So I guess what I am needing to know is can I take the duals off the rear and replace with the wheels from a single wheel? Is the width from hub to hub the same? Or should I just leave well enough alobe and get usd to driving the dually? Its a solid truck, only 170k miles, equiped with Banks Power Pack, Gear Vendor o.d, BD exhaust brake, air bag leveling. Was my Dad's truck used to haul a 5th wheel after he retired from the Army.

The hub assembly would make a single rear wheel setup stick way too far out. There is the possibility of swapping out the hub and drum assembly for single rear wheel ones for a normal stance.

Turns out the dual tire rear is 1 2/3" wider on either side... So run a single rear wheel, and remove the wheel spacer on the front. Note that some dual rear axles are full floaters and have large hubs, so you'll need a hole in the middle of the wheel to match. Once you have a rear wheel that fits, get a spacer for the front that's as small as possible to clear the rotor. It's possible, but it'll taks some time to make it look correct.

That link is regarding a Ford. I believe the Dodge will be 3-4" wider overall. You can knock the front axle adapter off and add a spacer on the front to even the width out if you don't mind the wheels and tires sticking out a bit.
You could also look for a Dodge 2500 rear axle and swap that in. Just be sure it has the same gear ratio as the front. I believe the ratios are 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10. A consideration is the length difference the yoke sticks out of the differential. The Dana 80 may be longer than a Dana 70 since there is a size difference and may require driveshaft lengthening and it may not. There may be enough slip in the driveshaft or transfer case that it doesn't amtter

Do a search on "DRW to SRW Dodge" and look at what pops up. Its a common conversion.

I used to own a 93 dodge CTD, sometimes I still miss that truck. there is nothing like a mechanical injected cummins. mine would start at the slightest twitch of the ignition key, idle torque could pull a house down. the best fuel mileage of any of my diesels.

they did have downsides namely the 1/2 ton brakes and old school interior and overall design but they were very reliable trucks.
