20" Barrel and NOT .308?

I have a TRG .308 with 26" Barrel this thing shoots lights out. So much so I won't chop it.

Now I don't want a repeat chambering so I am open to suggestion. Drop can be compensated easier than wind. As in I call wind when my app calls drop!!!


This has probably been done to superbowl and back. However I am of the opinion folks forget the past and play with what they got. Old post's get forgotten and my google foo is weak I am yet to establish an alternative to the .308

go with one of the 6.5s; 260 rem, 6.5x47, or 6.5 creedmore

I'd suggest the 7 CM over a 7-08 for a couple reasons, but they're trajectory twins to the 6.5's until the barrels run shorter and shorter, since they're less overbore and have different expansion ratio the 7's behave more like a 308/223 in a shorter barrel than the 6.5's do

A 20" barrel in 6.5CM will be good for 2600-2650fps on 140 class bullets without running dangerously high pressures. That's similar to the 165class 7's but the BC's on the 7's is going to give you a performance boost on the 6.5's.

I have a couple of spare 6.5 tubes and a few thousand 140 Amax's already or I'd be bugging Mark Gordon for a 7 Creedmoor when I lunch this current barrel.

Well, I am willingly assuming the previous poster knows their stuff re: the 7-08 and 7-C/M. In areas where my own experience is lacking I defer to others. For my purposes, a better established chambering, like the 7-08, tips my scale; but the reasons for the 7 C/M stated above make at least equal sense.

If I were looking for something new (already have 7mm08, 7mmSTW and 308) I would go for the 260. Federal is going to make their FGMM for it with the 142 grain SMK. Not sure what they will be charging for it but its good to know you can get factory match ammo for it. I like my 7mm08's, wish I could get factory FGMM for around $18 a box for them though.

I might also have suggested the .260 if I had any short barrel experience with it. All my .260 have been 24" or more.

I would have to look but I did 2 .260's (one was 20" the other 24") with the same reamer, load, brass, bullet ect. The 24" ran 2780 with the 140 A-max and the 20" ran 2670 to 2690. About 100fps loss.

I would probably go .260 as well. I'm on my 4th that will be built next month and suppressed - going to go 22". That said the 7mm-08 and .243 are still on my list of what I would like to try in the future.

Thanks for the advice folks, it is most helpfull.

I can tell you one thing for sure the availability of factory ammo is not a factor in the UK. It is just far too expensive to consider.

What kind of velocities are you guys getting out of the 7 Creedmore out of the 20" barrel with 162 Amaxes or 168 VLD's? I'm getting ready to start a 7mm project with a 20" barrel and I was going to do a 7-08 but that C/M might be cool.

I thought I heard somewhere that it was against the law to reload in the UK, is that not true? I just like to have my facts straight.
