My calling partner, Jim and I attended the annual Campbell County Coyote calling contest again this year. It was the 16th annual event held in Gillette, Wyoming. It is the same one we took 1st place in back in 2006 with a total of 13 dogs.

Anyway, it started Friday night and ran to Sunday at 2pm. It is a 2 day/night event. This year, a total of 55, 2 man teams entered the contest. It ran Dec. 5th thru the 7th.

We took a total of 12 coyotes this year to win 3rd place. First place was 19 coyotes and 2nd place was 13 coyotes. The top 10 teams got paid.

The FOXPRO FX5 is our go to call !!

    Nice shooting and calling.

What are your "go-to" sounds, if you don't mind letting the cat outta the bag?

I'm running a 532B with the TX5 remote and get along good with it as well. I quite often throw in a "solo" with a hand call in the middle of a set and that seems to work well also, ever tried that?

Nice looking rifle by the way, whats the specs on the 243 AI?

Re: 2008 Coyote Callling Contest.... took 3rd Place.

all the rabbit sounds worked great !

    specs are :

    Stiller TAC30 action
    Stiller 20 moa base
    Mcmillan A5 in precision camo
    Badger recoil lug
    Badger M5 DBM, 2 mags
ABS carbon barrel with Rock liner 7.75 twist 5 groove 26" finished
    Timney trigger at 2 lbs.
    NF NXS 3.5-15x56 2DD reticle

    weighs 10.5 scoped

Yes, I use hand calls too... kinda like fishing, throw out enough different lures and they will bite on something.

    Just curious.

    100% private..

Illegal to spotlight in Wyoming on public land. You can call it in daylight hours though.

Re: 2008 Coyote Callling Contest.... took 3rd Place.

Good to see they were coming in good. The weather has still been a bit up and down here in the southern part of the state. Waiting for it to chill out for good then they'll start responding a bit better. It's been warm enough nobody I know of has been having much luck yet this year.

Re: 2008 Coyote Callling Contest.... took 3rd Place.

All i can say is "sweet". I was watching a little one had to be juvenile. he was mousing in a field this morning taking my son to school. We have had to many people move in around here to do any shooting in between farms. It is only about a 3 minute drive and you can shoot. With all the people who have moved in the house cat call works good. Between the coyotes and the owls the cat population has really dwindled. Again nice going. I have been considering the Foxpro but it seems like big money. Everytime i start to save i buy another gun.

Wow, i guess some happy ranchers

How large of an area were the 55 teams hunting on?

Not to derail your post...They advertised 75$ bounty a couple years ago. A friend got 26 one weekend when the snow fell on the wheat fields. guess they cant outrun a RMK800 and a 12ga.
    smile.gif
They about crapped when he pulled up with a heap of dogs. Because he had so many they would only pay him 100 for all of them. needless to say, he was a bit pissed but had lots of fun.

Scott, congratulations! I need to come over and shoot that 243AI of yours some weekend. I'm in the market for another build after my 375AM is done.

nope... don't mess with decoys or putting the call out to far. The less movement in and out of an area the better. You'll see more coyotes if you leave the gimics at home

Re: 2008 Coyote Callling Contest.... took 3rd Place.

depends on a lot of things. Terrain being called, wind direction, time of year.

I have been calling for bobcats, typically stay up to 45 minutes to an hour per stand, and have had coyotes show up 30 to 40 minutes into calling.

One thing I learned for sure about calling coyotes is never say never, they will prove you wrong everytime.

+1, You want to be quiet in/out and watch the wind and sun. Reflections can really screw up a hunt. Also helps not to miss so they don't get call smart.

yes, we have called in 2 lions. One while elk hunting with the Foxpro and it came to the cow elk sounds. The other was deer in distress while calling in the mtns. We saw it's track on top of ours on the way back to the truck

Really - now that's a good idea. Grew up a needy kid and to know my Christmas gifts would have came from coyote, coon and lion furs would have been cool.....way cool. But then, I loved to hear about hunting. Pestered the dickins out of the guys I knew that hunted because my family did not hunt.
