I would always try English first, see where it goes. Then I would speak Spanish to them and all of a sudden they would smile and out comes the King's English. Every time they would compliment my pronunciations and ask where I learned my Spanish. While growing up and out with my grandmother, when she encountered friends or other cholos, she never spoke Spanish to them, only English, despite their greetings or whatever in Spanish. Family was different. Yes the demonrat Spanish was passable, but clearly elementary and well rehearsed.
