2020 SHOT Show: Day 2 (Wednesday, Jan 22, 2020)
Today I did a wall-to-wall of the LE/Mil areas, Pop-up Showcase, and the NEXT booths.
1. NNs/nothing new exhibitors (recall that if a company recently announced, prior to the start of SHOT, those announcements are NOT included here) – ADG (brass), Badger Ordnance, Daniel Defense, EO Tech, GA Precision/GAP, Horus Vision, JP Enterprises, Kowa, Oakwood Controls, Pelican, RCC Brass, Tangent Theta (my criteria is max magnification of at least 25); Torrey Pines, US Optics, and Yankee Hill/YHM.
2. Advanced Shooting Analytics/ASA [REVISED] - new player (from the Pop-Up Showcase), headed by a former NASA engineer, this company is pushing the envelope to advance accurate shooting of long range rifle systems. They were kind enough to edit my recap to properly address their tech (minor formatting edits by me),
“The patent-pending and trademarked Coordinated Thermal Expansion (CTX) technology addresses the impact of the thermal-characteristic disparities (i.e., movement due to varying temperatures (coefficient of thermal expansion) between all available stainless steel rifle actions and mating aluminum chassis. [For those who prefer a stock, over a chassis, ASA has developed a beddable receiver insert and bottom metal assembly.] ASA has also developed an improved scope mount from the same alloy. When used together (receiver-to-chassis interface and scope mount), the CTX technology has been found to almost totally ELIMINATE thermally-induced point of impact errors.”

Of note (for my purposes in posting this particular recap), a R700 long action version of their chassis (with embedded interface) will also be available for pre-order in March. Scope mounts to be added to their site shortly. [They’re scrambling to update the site, its already dramatically changed since earlier in the week.]
Of note, this is DARPA-class tech (read potential "customer"). I was very impressed in my discussions with John Maguire, the company CEO, a very sharp fellow, laser focused on rifle system accuracy-improvement frontiers. Very worth watching.
3. Axial Precision - new player (from the Pop-Up Showcase), builds rifles (.338 LM model available within 3 months, their "Arid 1760", .338 Edge model is shipping now) and is going into home-grown components, including barreled actions and "AllTerra Carbon" CF stocks; they will also sell actions to "qualified" smiths (their tech requires more than average capability to build them into rifles - read patented action-to-barrel interface); drill down to the details on their unique features using the "highlight dots" at https://www.axialprecision.com/ Very interesting tech.
4. Condition Red/CROM - first, their CR7 (semi-auto .338) will be back in production shortly, barrel supply issues. New product coming - the "CR50", a semi-auto, AR-style rifle, utilizing modified Barrett 10-round mags/M107, non-reciprocating charging handle, ambi controls (mag latch, bolt notch, and safety), standard AR15 lower parts kit, Geisselle trigger, 26" Bartlein barrel, and a 19.8# finished weight (in their own-design chassis); expected availability this Summer. 5. Elite Iron - was showing the new "Asset" suppressor for .375 CT, includes an external brake, claimed 168 dB for an un-suppressed sample, 138 dB with their single-section model with long brake, and 134 dB for their dual-section model with short brake (the long brake does not fit the dual-section suppressor); shipping in March, MSRP of approx $2000; external pics to follow.
6. Hoplite Arms - another new player (from the Pop-Up Showcase), advanced tech and compelling focus, lead by a very dedicated, forward-thinking leader/owner from aerospace manufacturing. Will be offering three series of rifles, two ELR-capable (the "Aspis" weapon system for .338 LM/NM class and the "Phalanx" weapon system for .375 CT thru .50 BMG class); has a very detailed development/disclosure thread on Snipers Hide (https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/hoplite-arms.6953294/). Some info - focus is on a hardened platform, capable of substantially exceeding the pressure "glass ceiling" of current rifles (read substantially higher pressures from current cartridges, using faster burning powders, and new cartridge designs to optimize performance at high pressures in the near future). They have produced 40 rifles in the Aspis line and will be sending out "field-proofing" units immediately following SHOT. They will also be sending units to a nationally-recognized testing for "to-failure" testing. The design is 99% complete with small fit and finish items still to be finalized. Projected MSRP is $5000 including a fitted Pelican case and their own-design brake and scope mount. Order taking (new orders) to begin by mid-Feb. Those first 40 units are expected to start shipping within three weeks. While a KMW Sentinel-stocked option is out there (12 stocks already in hand), the final fit-up/design tweeks, at Hoplite's end, is part of the 1% still to be done. Development info - the CT/.50 BMG model (Phalanx) is expected to be at the 99% level by mid-April, MSRP roughly $6800 (same "package" set as the Aspis); the high pressure cartridge designs are expected to start testing in April (one of those is in .338 for the Aspis, plus one each in.375 and .416 for the Phalanx). A very exciting "project"/new business model. My most sincere wishes for an outstanding success.
