I have a Kimber 84M Longmaster chambered in 22-250. The barrel is a heavy bull with a 1 in 14 twist. I am planning on reloading 52 grain Sierra Matchkings for it. I mostly use Alliant powder. Does anyone have any suggestions for a precise powder charge for long range precision while maintaining a relatively high muzzle velocity?

Re: 22-250 reloading question

i dont know with alliant, but my dad used 34.0 imr 4064 with 55 bphp and 55g rem spires in his 1-14 rem 700 heavy barrel since he bought it in 1972 and its the same load i still shoot in it today, makes nice small bugholes and its killed many hundreds of groundhogs at even insane distances because it shoots so flat.

Re: 22-250 reloading question

Sir,
About the 22-250. I use a "max load of IMR 4064". I am getting 3910 fps out of a Sierra 55 gr BK. 26" Rem VSSF. Accuracy is astounding. I do a lot of case prep and weigh all charges. I love the cartridge, but it is not a "long range" Ctg IMO. I find it shoots great to 500 yards, but accuracy goes from .25 moa at 400 yd to 1 MOA at 600. I think this is due to the slow twist. My next barrel will be a 12 twist and we will see if I am right.
Is anyone getting accuracy out of 55 grain bullets in the 22-250 past 500 yards with a 14 twist barrel?

Re: 22-250 reloading question

I have a 1:14 M700 in .22-250 and it loves 39.0gr of H380. .5 MOA 5 shot groups are common with this load. BTW, toss the SMKs and go with 52gr Nosler Custom Competiton. More consistent and cheaper than SMK.

I completely agree, with a 22-250 (at least mine) there was no difference with groups, even out to 400 yards between the two bullets.

However I load 37.7 grains H380/Winchester primer/Winchester brass/52 grain Nosler Customs loaded .04 off the lands. Will easily shoot 1/4 MOA at 100 and 200, at 300/400 however it gets more into 3/8 MOA.

Re: 22-250 reloading question

My kimber 22-250 loves 50Vmax's and Varget or R-15.

It also gets great velocities with below max loads. 36gr of Varget is netting me 3850fps. This is with moly'd 50's and their in the lands. The Kimber is throated quite sanely.

Re: 22-250 reloading question

My Remington 1-14" does really well with 35 grains of Reloader 15 pushing 55 grain V-maxes. Winchester cases, Fed 210M, lots of case prep. I don't have any velocity numbers as this was pre-chronograph for me, but was easily .5 MOA @ 100. I currently use Benchmark or H380.
