THIS KINDA LOOKS LIKE CRAP AS I'M COPY AND PASTING, AND IT'S NOT ACCEPTING MY CHARTS AND STUFF, BUT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH,
HERE IS SOME 22LR AMMO TESTED THROUGH A SAVAGE MK II. I'LL TRY TO CLEAN IT UP AS MUCH AS I CAN. ENJOY.
22 LR TEST
AS I HAD GOTTEN MORE INTERESTED IN RIMFIRE BENCHREST SHOOTING AND SMALL BORE SILHOUTTE, I HAD PURCHASED SEVERAL DIFFERENT BRANDS OF MATCH OR TARGET TYPE AMMO THAT WAS AVAILBABLE TO ME ON THAT DAY. MY GOAL WAS TO FIND AN AMMO THAT IS READILY AVAILABLE, AND FOR SHOOTING A MATCH FOR POINTS WOULD GIVE ME NOT NECESSARILY THE TIGHTEST GROUPS, BUT THE MOST HITS PER SQUARE INCH (IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE) INCLUDING ANY CLOSE IN FLYERS OR SEMI OPEN GROUPS UNDER 1? AT 50 YARDS, OR 100 YARDS, OR BOTH; CONSISTANTLY.
AT FIRST, I DIDN?T WANT TO INCLUDE PRICE AS A FACTOR, BUT I THEN I THOUGHT WHAT THE HECK! PERHAPS A LOWER PRICED AMMO WOULD PERFORM ALMOST AS WELL AS AMMO TWICE THE PRICE, WITH COMPARABLE POINT OF IMPACTS, THAT I CAN USE FOR PRACTICE. I DID FIND SOME INTERESTING THINGS OUT ON THAT SUBJECT.
BUT HOW DO I COME UP WITH A WAY OF OBJECTIVELY DETERMINING WHAT IS WORKING THE BEST, THROUGH MY SET UP, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT CONSISTANCY, ACCURACY, CLEAN BARREL SHOOTING, DIRTY BARREL SHOOTING, PRICE, PERFORMANCE PER COST, AND FLYERS?
I CAME UP WITH MY OWN WAY OF CALCULATING ALL THOSE FACTORS FOR THE PURPOSE OF WHAT I?M USING THE AMMO FOR. AS FAR AS I KNOW THESE FORMULAS DON?T RESEMBLE ANYTHING ELSE AND I APPOLOGIZE TO ANYONE IF THEY RESEMBLE YOURS.
THESE NUMBERS, LEAST IN MY MIND, ARE A WAY OF JUDGING THE RELATIVITY BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF AMMO, AND FOR WHAT I?M LOOKING FOR IN ANY PARTICULAR CATAGORY. FOR EXAMPLE, IF I?M IN A MATCH AND THEY DON?T ALLOW CLEANING OF BARRELS, I?LL LOOK FOR AMMO THAT SHOOTS WELL WITH A DIRTY BARREL. WHEN PLINKING AND NOT SERIOUS PRACTICE AT THE RANGE, RATHER THAN USING THE $10.00 PER 50 STUFF, MAYBE I CAN USE THE $5.00 PER 50 STUFF WITH COMPARABLE #?S WITH THE SAME POINT OF IMPACT, TO ACHIEVE NO SIGHT ADJUSTMENTS BETWEEN MANUFACTURERS.
PERHAPS THESE NUMBERS WILL HELP YOU, AND PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I ACTUALLY STUMBLED ON TO SOMETHING. MAYBE I JUST WASTED TIME FIGURING THIS OUT, BUT THE #?S ARE ACTUALLY SHOWING THE SAME RESULTS AS I GOT FROM MY TARGETS. OBVIOUSLY, RESULTS (AND OPINIONS) VARY WITH EQUIPMENT, SO I LISTED WHAT I WAS USING AND OTHER PARAMETERS I THOUGHT TO BE IMPORTANT.
EQUIPMENT AND SET UP USED: FIREARM: SAVAGE MKII 20? BULL BARREL 1 ? 16 TWIST FREE FLOATED, 1LB TRIGGER, LAMINATED WOOD STOCK, 20 MOA BASE. 25 YD ZERO OPTICS: VARIABLE POWER (ADJUSTED TO 20X) CROSSHAIR WITH CENTERED SINGLE TARGET DOT. ENVIRONMENTAL FOR 50 YARD: 25 DEGREES (F) AIR TEMP. 3 MPH OR LESS WIND FROM 2:00, SUNNY. SLIGHT SNOW PACK TO TARGET. ENVIRONMENTAL FOR 100 YARD: 27 DEGREE (F) AIR TEMP. 3 MPH OR LESS WIND FROM 7:00 TO 5:00, OVERCAST, NO SNOW COVER. TARGET: 1 INCH BLACK RING WITH .5? WHITE CENTER ON WHITE PAPER, TARGET PLACED AS LEVEL PLANE TO THE BORE AS I CAN GET IT USING A LASER. TESTS WERE DONE ON 2 SEPARATE DAYS, 1 WEEK APART AS WEATHER AND DAYLIGHT PERMITTED. CHRONOGRAPH WAS SET 10 FEET AWAY FROM MUZZLE.
SHOTS FIRED FROM BENCH, HARRIS BIPOD MOUNTED NEAR RECEIVER / MAG WELL AND USING A REAR BAG. ANY SHOTS KNOWN TO BE PULLED, THE ENTIRE GROUP WAS SHOT OVER. THE ROUNDS WERE STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, NO WEIGHING OR MEASURING RIM THICKNESS, ETC. AS THE PERFORMANCE OF SUBSONIC / STANDARD VELOCITY 22LR AMMO IN WIND IS WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED, I TRIED TO LIMIT THE TEST TO THE IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE AMMO OF THAT TYPE. THE AMMO LISTED IS THE ONLY AMMO I COULD GET OF THE SHELF IN MY AREA, AND THE PRICE PAID LOCALLY. I HOPE TO TEST AGUILA, LAPUA, FIOCCHI, ELEY, ETC. IN THE FUTURE AS TIME, WEATHER, AND FUNDS ALLOW.
I ALSO RANKED THEM IN 3 CATAGORIES: 50 YARD, 100 YARD, AND ?MULTI YARD? WHICH IS THE AVERAGE PERFORMANCE OF 50 AND 100, AS FAIRNESS TO EACH AMMO RESULTS COMPELLED ME TO DO SO.
EXPLAINATION OF TERMS, RATING #?S, AND EQUATIONS
THESE ARE THE TERMS, RATING #?S, AND EQUATIONS USED WITH MEASUREMENTS AND TESTING PARAMETERS TO GIVE AN OBJECTIVE JUDGEMENT ON THE AMMO USED.
MG = MEASUREMENT OF ?MAJOR GROUP? (EXCLUDING FLYERS) EG = MEASUREMENT OF ?EXTENDED GROUP? (INCLUDING FLYERS)
(THINKING OF MG AND EG AS THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE SPREAD ON A DEER RACK)
FL = FLYERS (SHOTS NOTICABLY DEVIATED FROM MG) FR = FLYER RATIO (# OF FLYERS / OUT OF 15 ROUNDS)
CBR = CLEAN BARREL RATING - (BARREL WAS DRY SWABBED, SHOT 5 RDS (30 SECONDS BETWEEN, DRY SWABBED AGAIN BETWEEN CHANGING AMMO). THIS RATING WAS DERIVED BY ADDING MEASUREMENTS OF MAJOR GROUP, EXTENDED GROUP, AND NUMBER OF FLYERS, DIVIDED BY 3 (# OF CATAGORIES). GAVE AMMO THAT SHOT WELL IN A CLEAN BARREL A RATING.
MG + EG + FLYERS DIVIDED BY 3 = CBR
DBR = DIRTY BARREL RATING - BARREL WAS DRY SWABBED, SHOT 10 RDS (30 SECONDS BETWEEN, DRY SWABBED AGAIN BETWEEN CHANGING AMMO). THIS RATING WAS DERIVED BY ADDING MEASUREMENTS OF MAJOR GROUP, EXTENDED GROUP, AND NUMBER OF FLYERS, DIVIDED BY 3 (# OF CATAGORIES), AND GAVE AMMO THAT SHOT WELL IN A DIRTY BARREL A RATING.
MG + EG + FLYERS DIVIDED BY 3 = DBR
CR = CONSISTANTCY RATING - INCLUDED THE ALL OF THE FACTORS OF CBR AND DBR, DIVIDED BY 6 (# OF CATAGORIES). IT WAS DESIGNED TO GIVE A CONSISTANTCY VALUE, AS SOMETIMES TIGHT GROUPS ARE SPOILED BY A DISTANT FLYER OR TWO AND MORE OPEN GROUPS WERE HELPED BY CLOSER FLYERS. SINCE THIS RATING USES ALL THE FACTORS IN A CLEAN AND DIRTY BARREL, AND ANY FLYERS ASSOCIATED, I THOUGHT IT WOULD GIVE AN ALL AROUND GRADE OF PERFORMANCE / CONSISTANTCY. THINK OF IT AS THE MOST SHOTS YOU CAN GET INTO AND / OR ?NICK? A QUARTER AT 50 YDS, CONSISTANTLY. IT GAVE AMMO A RATING SHOT THROUGH A CLEAN AND DIRTY BARREL, AND GAVE RATING OF THE AMMO USED THROUGH BOTH. USED ALL 15 ROUNDS.
MG + EG + FLYERS OF CBR AND DBR = CR
VR = VALUE RATING - THIS ADDED A PRICE PER ROUND (PPR) FACTOR, WHICH AT FIRST I DIDN?T THINK WAS IMPORTANT, HOWEVER AS WE KNOW SOME MATCH / TARGET AMMO CAN BE PRICEY. THIS ?PERFORMANCE PER COST? ACTUALLY HELPED ME OUT ON PICKING A PRACTICE AMMO THAT GIVES SIMILAR PERFORMANCE TO MY TOP SHELF AMMO. THIS ALSO HELPED ME RATE LOWER PRICED AMMO COMPARED TO FLYERS, ETC. WHICH HELPED IT OUT IN THE OVERALL RATINGS. CLEAN AND DIRTY BARREL MEASUREMENTS, PLUS PRICE PER ROUND, DIVIDED BY 7 (THE AMOUNT OF FACTORS USED).
MG + EG + FLYERS (OF CBR) + MG + EG + FLYERS (OF DBR) + PPR DIVIDED BY 7 = VR
OAR = OVERALL RATING - BASICALLY TOOK ALL THE RATINGS AND CAME UP WITH AN ?OVERALL RATING? WHICH I WOULD BELIEVE JUDGES AN AMMO USING ALL FACTORS DESCRIBED ABOVE, AND GIVES THE BEST USAGE OVER MANY FACTORS.
CBR + DBR + CR + VR DIVIDED BY 4 = OAR
BALLISTIC COEFFICIENTS COULD NOT BE FOUND ON EACH, HOWEVER GENERALLY RANGE ANYWHERE BETWEEN .114 TO .144 DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK AND WHAT DRAG MODEL (G-1 G-7) YOU USE. IF I COME ACROSS MORE DEFINATE ANSWERS I WILL PASS THEM ON.
50 YARD RESULTS AND COMMENTS
THE FOLLOWING #?S BROUGHT SOME SURPRISES TO ME AS SOME OF THE MID / LOWER PRICED STUFF ISN?T REALLY ALL THAT BAD.
ALSO SOME OF THE HIGHER PRICED STUFF WASN?T WHAT IT WAS CRACKED UP TO BE FOR THE COST, AT LEAST THROUGH MY SET UP.

OF THE REMINGTON SUB SONIC, FEDERAL GOLD MEDAL, AND CCI GREEN TAG, WHICH ARE COMPARIBLE IN MANY WAYS, I RANKED THE REMINGTON SUB SONIC
SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE OTHERS DUE TO CLOSE GROUPS FOR THE PRICE. IT FARED MUCH WORSE AND TAKEN OUT OF CONTENTION IN THE 100 YARD.
FROM A POINT OF IMPACT PERSPECTIVE (P.O.I.), FEDERAL GOLD MEDAL, REMINGTON/ELEY, CCI GREENTAG, WOLF TARGET EXTRA AND MATCH TARGET,
HAD BASICALLY THE SAME P.O.I., CENTER OF GROUPS WITHIN .25? OF EACH OTHER. REMINGTON TARGET 22 AND REMINGTON SUB SONIC WERE SOMEWHAT CLOSE,
CENTER OF GROUPS WITHIN .5? OF EACH OTHER. WINCHESTER T-22 SHOT COMPLETELY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BULLSEYE FROM OTHERS ON THE LIST.
ALL P.O.I. GROUPS WERE WITHIN 1.75? OF EACH OTHER, WINCHESTER T-22 BEING THE EXCEPTION.

LOOKING AT ALL THE FACTORS, IT APPEARS THAT THROUGH A SAVAGE MKII IN A SILHOUTTE MATCH WHERE VARIOUS RANGES ARE SHOT,
AND OF THE AMMOS TESTED, THE WOLF MATCH TARGET IS THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK (VR) AND ALTHOUGH MAY NOT BE THE BEST THROUGH
A CLEAN BARREL (CBR), OFFERS THE BEST GROUPS AND CONSISTANTCY (CR). AT A 100 YARD ONLY MATCH, THE SAME HOLDS TRUE, CLEAN
OR DIRTY BARREL. AND ALTHOUGH AT 50 YARDS IT GIVES UP A LITTLE TO WOLF MATCH EXTRA, IT IS BY NOT MUCH.
IF PRICE IS THE MAIN CONCERN, IT SEEMS AT 50 YARDS, REM. SUBSONIC IS A GOOD ROUND, BUT AT 100, DOESN?T EVEN GROUP GOOD ENOUGH TO MEASURE.
SO FOR A FEW CENTS PER ROUND MORE, ONE CAN STEP UP TO FEDERAL GOLD MEDAL WHICH PLACED BETTER IN THE 100 YARD AND MYR THAN SOME AMMO TWICE

IN ORDER TO KEEP THINGS SOMEWHAT SIMPLIER, IF A GROUP WAS JUST UNDER 1?, 1/2? (.5?), ETC., IT IS MARKED -1?, -1/2? (-.5?), JUST OVER +1?, +1/2? (.5?), ETC.
IT WAS THEN ROUNDED TO THE NEXT WHOLE NUMBER IN RATINGS.

IT?S PRICE, WITH LESS DROP AND FLYERS THAN MOST. SOMETHING CHEAP AND SEMI ACCURATE, FOR THE NOT SO DESCRIMINATE SHOOTER, SEEMS TO BE THE
WINCHESTER T-22, BUT I WOULDN?T TAKE IT TO ANY COMPETITION.
SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. NUMBERS AND VALUES THAT BREAK DOWN THE AMMO TESTED FOR YOUR STYLE OF SHOOTING, WHETHER 50 OR 100 YARDS, CLEAN OR DIRTY
BARREL, CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE. COMPITITION OR PUNCHING HOLES IN PAPER AT THE RANGE. HOPE TO TEST OTHERS THE SAME WAY IN THE FUTURE, BUT UNTIL THEN,
THIS IS WHAT TO EXPECT OUT OF THE TYPE OF NON HIGH VELOCITY AMMO YOU CAN FIND EASILY.
