I hope this is the right place for the thread. I will delete it if not.

So I am having a 22 CM build on a Tikka actions and Proof comp contour barrel. I have heard, not really confirmed that the 22 CM is a barrel burner. I would rather not have to replace my barrel after 1200 rounds so I wanted to ask this question. How do you increase barrel life?

My plan was to load the 22 cm with 90 grain Berger to about 2900 FPS. Curious if that would help extend the life or if I should call my gunsmith and have him chamber me a 22gt.....not sure if that is much help either. I just happen to have the 224 barrel so regardless of barrel life I am building a 224 caliber something.

Hoping for some real numbers on barrel life and running the 22 cm a bit slower. I know guys getting wild velocities out of it.

Thanks

You're going to get similar barrel life with similar performing cartridges like the 22 CM vs 22 GT. If you're looking for longer barrel life you are going to have to sacrifice performance. There are steps you can take like keeping the barrel cool while shooting strings of fire, lighter bullets at lower velocity etc. 22 CM is a bit of a boutique cartridge still so it's not like shooting it is going to be a cheap or strictly factory load option. It really isn't much more than a 22-250 with fast twist for heavier bullets.

Yeah I think I am going to have to bear the consequences of my choice. It will be fun for a while and I will likely just rebarrel it to a 25 CM

I really enjoy 22cm. I just use mine to shoot critters, not the best choice for plinking, unless you don’t mind changing barrels. 80.5 Berger is great on everything up to and including deer

It was with the knowledge that barrels are expendable in the pursuit of high performance that I built my 22 Creedmoor with a Zeus QC action. This way I don’t have to remove the action from the stock to replace a barrel.

FWIW, unless you’re shooting a fairly short barrel, 90 Bergers at 2900 sounds fairly sedate, though it’s still a .22 bore with a lot of powder burning down the tube.

My B.R. has over a thousand on it and still shoots very well, though the throat seems to have moved quite a bit (need to bore scope it at some point).

I’ve always thought one of the super-hard Barts would be the way to go with that round, though you already have the proof.

I am still not sure if heavy bullets moving slow or light bullets moving fast kill a barrel quicker. If I could get 2k out of the 22cm I would be incredible happy.

I am not sure either. A heavy bullet still needs to move quick to achieve any semblance of accuracy or terminal performance. Yeah, maybe not low threes for a 90 grain, but probably 2800ish or so. Mine will be launching 85.5 Bergers between 3050 and 3200 ( I hope 😂). Everything I have seen says if you have either long or fast bullets wear barrels quick.

Barrel life’s always been the trade off. I had a .22 CM barrel on my rig, and sure, it shot pretty damn good, but honestly, it didn’t outshoot my .22 GT. The GT’s cranking the same speed, and it’s burning way less powder.
