Besides Bartlein are there any other vendors that make a good .22 CM barrel? Is McGowen any good?

What twist rates are best for the 90 grain bullets? I have heard 1:6 is good for that bullet weight and length.

With a 26” barrel what length of gas system is best? +1,2, or 3?

    Thank you for your time

    McGowen makes very good barrels.

For fast twist, high powered .22's you have to consider two things. Stabilizing the bullet and not over spinning them to blow them up. You'll want to keep bullets under 300,000rpm.

    MV x (12÷twist rate) x 60 = RPM

    3000 x 12/ 7.5" x 60 = 288,000rpm

    For stabilizing consult:

For ARs you're going to need to manage back pressure. A 22CM on an AR is going to have insane back pressure. You'll need a +2 gas system on a 20" barrel or something like that. Minimal dwell. Adjustable gas block. Turned almost all the way off.
    Heavy buffer as well?

Would not do a 1-6. 1-7,7.5 is pretty common. I’m running a pair of 1-8’s on bolt guns. Run 60-80 grain bullets. If I was to go gas I would either go DNA firearms or Sgt of Arms for a build. If building yourself I would go T-box for a barrel.
Thank you, looks like the ALCO & Hornady 90s can be stabilized by 1:7 just fine. And i have not heard of 77-80 grain bullets coming apart with a 1:7.

Seems like the +3 gas system is needed with a 26” barrel to keep the brass from getting beaten up.

Does anyone know if there are freebore requirements for 70-80 grain and 90 grain projectiles with AR Barrels in this caliber? It seems like Craddock makes barrels that are optimized for either 70-80 or 90.

Mcgowan does shit barrel work. Buy at your own risk. There blanks might be ok, but their other machine work and quality of products is pretty much garbage in my experience. Every single one of the 4 barrels I have received from them has had problems. Shit crowns, shit threads, undersized threads. I am at the point I have stopped contacting them about it, because each subsequent replacement is just as bad as the one before.

Replacement for a barrel with undersized muzzle threads. The next pictures are the replacement for the barrel above, or barrel number 3. I don't have pictures of the AR barrel on my phone.

I don't have wires to measure the tennon threads on the new barrel. But they are very loose compared to my other barrels going into the same action. Not as loose as the last one though.

    Ordered one from Craddock.

Do you guys put muzzle brakes on a 22 CM? I see them offered on Craddock’s site.

How about flutes? Do they do anything besides reduce weight?

That’s unacceptable sorry you’re having such an issue
