I need help selecting a 22 GT (or maybe 22 CM) shouldered prefit.

It will be primarily for calling coyotes. Planning on 18” length and using bullets in the 65-80gr range.

Twist rate: 1:8? Would this be ideal for my chosen bullets? And maybe still shoot decent if I did load some of the 52/53 gr?

Bore diameter: .218 or .219?

Rifling: 4 groove, 5R?

I’m planning to go through either PVA or straight jacket armory mostly because of the ease of online ordering and I’ve read enough good things about both.

Barrel MFG options I’m looking at are PVA osprey, CRB, Bartlein, and just the standard tier 1 match prefits from SJA (not sure what mfg blanks those are using).

I’m sure they’d all shoot great but if I’m about to spend $800-900 on this barrel I want to get it right the first time.

Im running a 7 twist 22 creed currently (previous barrel was a 7.5), and im running 90 atips at the moment @3075 with a 20" bartlien. Previous barrel (20" bartlien 7.5 twist) I mainly shot 60gr TMK's @3600 fps. It was a hammer, was able to sling 75 elds @3400 . I'm seriously considering pulling this current barrel and putting a 7.5-8twist back on. My thermal lived on this gun 90% of the time. I bought my 8yo son a 8twist preferred barrels barreled Kelbly action, it will not stabilize 90gr atips.

I dont think youd go wrong with an .218 bore 8twist barrel. Hard to go wrong with a bartlien 5r barrel.

75 ELD’s at 3400 sounds great. With an 18” barrel idk if I’ll get there but something similar to your experiences are what I’m after. I don’t envision ever going 88-90gr bullets with this gun so I was ruling out 1:7 twist for that. Then 1:7.5 vs 1:8 might be splitting hairs for my bullet choices.

If some options are .218 bore vs others .219 bore is it worth avoiding one vs the other?

All I'm doing is yote hunting with this Gun and IDK why I wanted to try 90s, But I did and wish id just went back to an 8twist.

I wouldn't say avoiding either one is an issue between .218 vs .219. I seemed to have better speeds with the .218. As far as the twist goes id look at the 8 twist as you could shoot lighter bullets if wanted without overspinning them too much and causing them to blow up. I didn't have issues with the 7.5 twist. When I done a ladder, I was able to push them to 3770 but started having heavy bolt lift and decided to back it down, I was using H4350. I pulled that barrel at 1400 rounds, It opened up to about 3/4 moa with an occasional flyer.

IF I wasn't so heavily invested Id go with a 22gt. Less powder and you aren't giving up much speed.

Yeah I mostly wanna try 22 GT for the slightly less powder charge and case efficiency, and hopefully brass longevity. Brass will be expensive, so the more shootings I can get from it the better.

I think I’ll go 1:8 twist. I’ve got other guns to fill the dept. of shooting heavy bullets at long range. The intent here is really coyotes probably 400 yards and in (which is about 90% of the opportunities I get when calling).

@bohem

I’m thinking of buying one of your group buy barrels in a 1:8 twist chambered in 22 GT.

The spring group buy link gave me the option to select 1:8 (what I want for 60-80 gr bullets I think).

However the 22 cal prefits page from your main website states that all 22 cal prefits are 1:7 twist.

Could you clarify for me, are 1:8 indeed available through the group buy?

They're 7 or 8, depending what you select in the GB.
That statment on the 7 twist is a couple years old, I missed fixing that when we started doing 224-8's as well.
