22 mag love

Re: 22 mag love

Not to many 22 mag lovers only because of price of ammo I think...love the round but hate the cost. I only have one in a revolver. Would like to hear what others have to say.....

Re: 22 mag love

Accuracy issues are part of the reason as well (and this is an accuracy forum).
Last year I purchased a Savage 93FVSS. Tacticool stock, Hawke 6.5-20x Tactical scope, Harris bi-pod and a few other goodies.
Not the best, but it still comes in at well over a grande for a .22.
1MOA on a real good day...1.5MOA is more like average.
And everything I've read says this is pretty good shooting for this cartridge.
(I know...there will be those who claim 1/2MOA out of the box...but this isn't the norm)
If I had purchased the same rifle in .17HMR I'd be shooting a
1/2MOA with relative ease.
What the WMR has over the .17 is knockdown power. Coyotes at 100m are easy, and I wouldn't hesitate to try for one at 150m, which would be a stretch for the .17.
But I mostly paper punch, so a .17 will find a place in the safe sometime next year.

Curious...what's your preferred shot placement on coyotes @ 100+ with a .22 Mag?

Re: 22 mag love

Deadly punk...chest with hollowpoint has dropped any coyotes I've shot. Admittedly I'm more of a paper puncher, so my total coyote take is no more than 15-20. At 100m+ I don't feel comfortable enough with the WMR to try for headshots, though wouldn't hesitate to do so with a .17...at least if they all shoot as well as my friends, also a Savage 93.

Sniper...the Boyd's stock it is.
I tied the 'stock' stock for a few months and 2" at 100m was about all I could do. It just flexes too much. Maybe it was psychological, but the Boyds stock easily knocked 1/2" off my groups.

Re: 22 mag love

My Savage 93 is my go-to gun. nothing special, just the standard iron sights and standard stock. I tell you what though, grab the right round and I can kill anything with that gun. Except Bears. I'll leave that to my big honkers. though I did go through a phase a while back, put a scope on it, and did pretty good out to 300.

Re: 22 mag love

I have sold my first 22 mag over 17 years ago and still regret it to this day. It was a little marlin bolt action mag fed and with win supreme it was a hammer.
I may have to replace it now that I think about it.

Re: 22 mag love

My first gun ever was a marlin 783 in 22 mag. Got it when I was 12 with money I saved from mowing grass, that 80 bucks sure seemed like a lot than
smile.gif
still got it, and its a decent shooter, but ammo prices keep it from getting used much

I had one as well. It was the most accurate 22 mag I've owned. It even out shot my Anschutz 141M.

Re: 22 mag love

I love my Winchester 9422M. I can remember when I was young, everybody else had a 500 pack of rounds, while I had 50. I probably still paid a bit more than them. Awesome round in a levergun.

Re: 22 mag love

I built a nice 22 WMR off a CZ455.

I have a 22lr barrel as well, but wanted the WMR for hunting.

Its not the best hunting setup as it is pretty heavy but it is accurate. .5" groups at about 80 yards are pretty easy. Not as accurate as 22lr match, but it cuts through wind better and is much more capable for small game.

CZ455
standard 22wmr barrel shown ( I also have a Lilja 22lr)
Manners T4 stock
Rimfire Tech 20MOA base (dont think they make these anymore) same as DIP though basically.
Yo dave trigger, breaks at about 18 ounces.
Bolt knob conversion by hooper Ordinance. Fits PERFECT.
Bolt polished by yours truly, slicker than goose shit.
Nightforce 3-15 NXS Mil/mil (mil dot ret)

Griffin Armament Checkmate II sound suppressor W/ QD mount.
Vickers sling.
Harris bipod with must have pod-loc

Only thing I might do differently is swap to an optic that has a shorter paralax focus range. The Nightforce is about a 50 yard minimum or slightly more. It's better suited to a longer range gun.

Re: 22 mag love

what ammo u shooting through that cz, how do u like that stock,im thinking of getting a tacticool stock for mine but i don't know how it will fit with what i want to do with the rifle, i will hunt and shoot long range targets, my buddy has the same savage i have, and it sits in a boyds thumbhole stuck and i like the way it feels, but i kinda like the way the tacticool looks as well

Re: 22 mag love

I bought my wife a new savage this summer with the laminated thumbhole stock with stainless barrel. It will shoot the hornady 30 grain vmax 1 moa at 100 and almost the same hole at 50 yards. All the other cci, fiocchi, federal, and remington didn't shoot as good. At least you can get the hornday in a 500 round box from midway for around $110.

I want to get the 22 lr version that's at the gun shop to shoot cheaper. She'll go through 3 or 4 boxes in one afternoon if we have multiple targets up so she can just hammer one. I bet she didn't miss maybe 8 times shooting at 120 yards in a 10-20 mph breeze the last outing with it on a 8" steel target.

Re: 22 mag love

mine shoots cci tmj and cci vmax and cci hp almost hole in hole at 25yds i just need a better stock here soon im going to try some 50gr hp

Re: 22 mag love

.22 mag is my walkaround rifle, love it better than my .22lr's. a bit pricier to feed for paper, but worth every penny in the field.

Marlin 882SS, rifle basix .75lb trigger, millet rings, centerpoint 4-16, weaver polar caps, bulter creek sling, harris bipod, generic oversized bolt handle, command arms cheekpiece.

I have a tacticool on my ruger 10/22. It is decent but the flex in the stock I think might have something to do with a wandering zero.

The T4 was not cheap, but it replicates a centerfire feel and my zero does not change ever. I am shootin CCI ammo through it.

Overall the gun is a bit larger than a nice handy field 22. But it allows a nice range of abilities. And the stock is not filled, so if I need to I can snap it up fairly easily and take a "crack shot" at something if need be. That being said I need to change optics. The NF is great for 70yards+ but in that closer hunting distance it doesnt work well at all. Great for shooting out to 300+ though

Re: 22 mag love

Okay, I may have to eat some crow.
My post above (about .22WMR accuracy) may have been premature.
A bit of the story. Purchased the Savage early in the year.
Because of limited funds I had to do it in bits and pieces. The supplies Bushnell scope (3-9x40 Banner) seemed less an issue than the stock...so the Boyds stock with bi-pod and such was first.
1-1.5" groups.
I purchased the Hawke Tactical scope about 2 weeks ago. What it seems is considered the bottom end of good scopes, and apart from the 'cool' factor (target turrets, illuminated reticle) I didn't think it would be a huge improvement over the Bushnell.
Well, gave it its first real test yesterday and fairly easily managed 4 groups all very slightly under an inch. And my worst of the day was 1.25".
I now see now why there is so much animosity (at times) when people ask which 'good' $150 scope they should buy.

Re: 22 mag love

given the right ammo and a decent scope the 22 mag will surprise u,i have a tasco varmint 2-10 mill dot on mine now but when i change scopes off my tc 223 ill probally put it on the mag its a nikkon 4-12 milldot so i can use that spot on app the only thing that sucks with the scope is their is no ao on it but at 4 power i shouldnt have to worry to much
