.22 Scope

Need some advice and guidance as it relates to a scope magnification on a .22 platform. Is there any logic or rational to go to a 20+ variable power optic? Looking at using the Vector Viper new FFP scopes. Would just like to hear others experiences.

Hey Chiller,

I think that PST would make a great choice.Hopefully they will track well.

I use a FFP Horus Predator 8-26x50 on my Anschuts 22.It's in IPHY.I use holdovers only.

I like it because I can make a 10Y head shot on a prarie dog or a 300 yard shot on steel a few seconds later without dialing.

I've got a bunch of little knock over steels that I set up at random distances.I use my RF to range them and the range card feature in the ATRAG-MP program for an IPHY holdover firing solution.Great practice and loads of fun.

as far as on paper, you can always back it down from 20x or higher to 6x or 8x if you find you don't need the extra magnification.

don't neccessarily need a spotting scope to see hits, and the higher magnification helps with seeing the small splash on misses.

if the platform is to be used as a "trainer" for the centerfire big brother, i'd pick the same magnification range as on the centerfire.

for hunting a 4-16x seems good combining low magnification for close shots on squirrels, higher magnification for stuff out further.

like the saying goes - anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

Is it a Vector made scope or a Vortex scope?

I'm not familiar with Vector but Vortex has a 6.5 to 20 power Viper scope that will work for .22 rimfire, I think as long as you are not hunting with it. 6.5x could be a challenge with varmints.

For targets, 20x past 150 yards would be nice. Aim small, miss small.

I am currently using a fixed 4x, but I think I will move to variable power as this will provide better training.

For 22's I like something that goes down at least to 4x and up to at least 10x. An Adj. Obj. that will adjust down to 25yds is a feature that is very nice also.

I have a Vortex Viper (BDC) on my 40X and like it, with the exception of the turrets... but you get what you pay for..

I have been through a whole bunch of scopes on 10/22, 17HMR and .22Lrs and find I always go back to more magnification.. So personally I'd go with something along the lines of what you would put on a center-fire rifle magnification wise .. the 6-20X Viper is "just about right there".
Now from a training point of view.. it's useful to zoom back to like 8 to 10X on those 200yrd shots to get the "feel" of long range.. but at least you have options when you have a 6-20X zoom.

I'm a big fan of the Leupy 3-9 EFR. It's a great scope for the .22lr...especially if you ever plan to use it as a hunter. The scope allows for parallax control, and is light weight / small enough not to be a burden in the field. Highly recommended.

I recently (last summer) had Leupy add soem M-1's to the scope...makes it even better!

I had used a USO ST10 on my CZ452 and went back to the Leupold MK4 3.5X10 M3...really helps dialing distance quickly...

I've gone through a number of scopes on my .22's, everything from 8.5-25X, fixed 10x and 16x, and a 4x. In the end, (I only shoot paper), I've found a fixed 16x Leupy Mark-4 to be my favorite setup.

I would look at Mueller. I have a Mueller 4.5-14x40AO APV duplex reticle. The Mueller has an adj. obj. that varies from 10 yard to infinity and it's economically priced as well. I believe I paid $100 for it.

I put a 3-9x40 on mine and it has served me well. Don't need a spotter up to 50 yards.

+1 on the Mueller scopes, IMO there a sleeper deal. I just put one of there APT, same as APV except mill dots, turrets and 30mm tube, on a 10/22 and its great. Tracks well and returns to zero every time, no stops but its a 140.00 scope too.

I am in same boat as you chiller. Need a quality scope for my .22 trainer and am seriously considering the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP. Either that or a big jump into a Razor HD or Premier. Just not sure I can wait for the PST's to show up, I want some good glass now.

I use the Tasco 6-24x42 MilDot Varmint/Target scope. For a .22, they are a good compromise between features, capability, and price (around $80). Look for Tasco Model VAR624X42M. A/O focuses down to 15yd, 75+ MOA of elevation adjustment, covered 1/4MOA resetable Target Knobs. Not the brightest in dim light, but still a nice scope for the money. I have 4.

I ended up going with the Falcon Menace 4.5 x 14 with the ML16 Reticule.
It is reasonably priced and is similar enough to my Leupold ER/T with its TMR Reticle to make for some good practice.

Chiller,

The new Bushnell 3-12FFP would make an excellent 22 scope also.

I think you'd need a 20 MOA base for the 6-24 FFP model if you wanted to shoot to 200Y
