Developing multiple loads for 2 rifles:
Savage Stealth Evolution, 223, 20", 1:9
R700 5R 308, 24", 1:11.25

Starting with seating depth, then moving to powder charge. First 2 projectiles for seating depth test are:
Sierra 69 TMK
Sierra 175 TMK

Following Berger's advice re: VLD seating depth, and testing:
6 different COALs for 308, from 2.83-3.03, all with 42 grains N150
5 different COALs for 223, from 2.28-2.36, with 23.5 grains of N140.

Seating depth test below. I had to rush when finishing 308, so barrel got hot (noted on target). I could still hold my hand on it, but it was almost uncomfortable. Shot a second factory grouping to compare with cold, since I knew she was hot. All noted on target.
For these projectiles, I selected:
2.90 COAL for 308
2.30 COAL for 223

Next I will test the charge, thinking of testing:
23, 23.5, and 24 grains N140 for the 223
42-46 grains N150, by 0.5 grains or until signs of pressure.

I'm new to reloading, so any insights/advice appreciated. Thanks!

For what it's worth I always have the best luck fiddling with coal last. I usually start .020 off the rifling, find a node near the speed I want, and then mess with seating depth if needed.

Groups shot at 100 yards? Are you able to get enough distance for a ladder test?

Thanks, yes, 100 yards. How far for a ladder? I do head out to a long range spot once a month or so.

The R700 has 250 thou of jump from sammi! Savage is about half that. I chose to do COAL first because the TMK's are shaped like VLD's and I had read Berger's tip, as well as stories from frustrated shooters. Do you believe I'd find different "best" COALs if I had done powder first?
