.223 Bolt action build for 2018

I am putting together my list for parts to purchase to build a .223 Bolt gun. I would appreciate any input.
This will be my 2018 gun project.

Action: Defiance Deviant or Bighorn TL3SA
Chamber: .223 Wylde as I Shoot Factory ammo
Barrel length: 20" or 22"
Barrel: Bartlein 1:7.7"
Trigger: Timney 510 or Trigger Tech I like 3lb pull weight

Magazines: What magazine works well in a .223 bolt gun?

I will use a Thunder Beast Arms Ultra-7 .223 suppressor


I figure by time I get everything ordered and paid for. With ATF wait times it will be December 31 of 2018 before I know it

I hear the MDT .223 mags work well but don’t have any.

I too am looking to build a nice .223 bolt gun this year.

I did this a couple of years ago ... and sold the gun. A mistake! Will follow this thread looking for ideas as I would really like another one. Mine was on a 700 built by RWS. Dammit I wish I still had it.

Seems like an expensive build for .223. What are your objectives?

Some factory rifles do very well right out of the box. Why not a Howa Mini, Tikka T3x or CZ 527?

My thoughts were with the Deviant or the TL-3 I could swap bolts or bolt head and have an awesome action in a different caliber. Fairly easily.

I honestly have not looked at the others you mentioned. I need to find a QUALITY gun shop. LOTS of AR's and crap at my LGS.

McFred, what rile produced that? Also, I am a factory ammo guy at this point . Not set up to reload .223, .308 yes

Looks like a CZ 527 mag, to me. They're pretty accurate rifles!

I'm quickly gonna be known as "the CZ 527 guy" if I keep jumping in to talk about it, but I can't help myself. I love mine. Took it out yesterday in 10°F weather with some half-assed handloads I threw together. Photos of (admittedly cherry picked) groups below. The rifle is capable of these groups every time...but I'm not. Lol

The best group this rifle ever shot was with a brand new shooter behind the trigger on her first five rounds. First time EVER on a rifle. Needless to say I framed the target for her...

OP, if you can live without all the fancy parts you have listed above; pick up a 527 with 1:9 twist (~$650), drop it in an HS Precision stock (~$300), and pick up a quality budget optic. Buy yourself a Dillon 650 with the savings, and start cranking out quality ammo for 1/2 price or less. More savings equals more shooting.

I like the described build. I have done a few similar in 5.56. One on a 700. Couple on custom actions. Might suggest Surgeon action. Just a personal decision but I simply prefer the features the action offers.

Jackinfl, the group I posted is with a 1:9 CZ 527 Varmint. The Howas are supposed to be getting 1:8 twist barrels soon, and I believe the Tikkas are already 1:8 (I could be wrong) if you're interested in shooting heavier projectiles. If you want the TL3 for 'upward mobility' then go ahead, it sounds like a solid build. You still haven't said what you're after though. Do you want to punch 100yd paper? Ring 1000yd steel? Shoot pigs or gators? There's not much sense in a .338 if you're limited to 100 yards and high velocity .223 will likely damage steel up close.

I want to use it to shoot matches, locally, to practice fundamentals cheaper than my .308 and to see how much more accurate a 223 bolt gun is over my SPR. A test bed to see if I can shoot one better than the other. As a build on base for later. I am getting close to retirement and I deserve nice things... Just don't tell my wife that a $600 stock gun was an option.
